External hard drive problem! please help!!!

I was using Win XP on my Toshiba Satellite A215 S5818 until yesterday, now im using windows 7, so i insert my Transcend Storejet external hard drive, it was working perfectly like it used to. So i left my lap top running through the whole night because i was downloading something. I get up this morning and my disk isnt working. I was looking for a solution but no use, i tried to initialize the disk with disk management and i get the "incorrect function" error. I noticed that i have two drivers that are not installed, both of them are "base system device", i tried to upgrade them automaticly online but windows cant find the drivers. The thing is i have valuable stuff on the drive, so i just need the files, i can get rid of the drive right away with the guarantee and get a new one. Thank you very much, and i would appreciate a fast reply!

Can you post a screenshot of Disk Management? Also does the external physically turn on AND does Windows acknowledge that you have plugged it in when you unplugged it and replugged it in?

If you have another computer lying around try connecting it to that one to see if will work with that one. If so then backup all the files then attempt to reformat the drive to determine if there is something wrong. Also, if it has a AC adapter try unplugging it from the source (ensure the drive is unplugged from the adapter), then replug in the adapter then plug it back into the HDD unit. Sometimes the adapter can over heat and shut down.

Physically it turns on, and also windows reads it, i see the tray icon. It was installing it properly, but it didnt show up in my computer. I tried as i found out on the internet to initialize it. When i tried that it showed an error message "incorrect function". I dont know what the hell happened because the external is 2 weeks old and never felt. Anyway after i posted this thread a friend of mine that has a pc service shop told me that he will get the data out, and i will have to return the hard drive, which is ok, im sorry i didnt tell you this earlier but i thought it might help others that have this problem. Thank you very much for the help
