Win 7 not recognizing internal mem card reader

"One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and windows does not recognize it.

I have 4 USB ports in the back which are connected to my printer, mouse, keyboard and external hard drive which are all functioning fine.

I have two USB ports on the front which are unoccupied.

I have an internal memory card reader in this desktop, and that's the only thing I think it can be.

To resolve the problem it is asking me to reconnect the device or replace it.

I have disconnected and reconnected th memory card reader while the pc was on, the pc recognizes a device has been disconnected and reconnected, but not what it is.

Under device manager, it says, "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)"

I have therefore disabled it for now, but would like to get it working.

Do you think this problem wil be fixed automatically in an update sometime.

When I go to driver details, it says "No driver files are required or have been loaded for this device"

And when I click on update driver, it says I have the latest driver.

    Please help!

If you disconnect this device, the error goes away? If so, then you should check for updated drivers from the manufacturer.

Well, the error is regarding the device, so obviously if I disconnect it, the error goes away because the device is not longer connected. But I am not trying to get rid of the error in that way, I want to get the memory card reader working, and as far as I am aware, no driver is required for it.

What make/model/brand is it? Have you googled for that to see if there are any issues with Windows 7? There are always drivers required, otherwise the hardware won't function. You just might not have to download any from a manufacturer, but that's not necessarily the case for brand new operating systems that might not have support built-in yet.

Hello, I just upgraded from Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit to Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit and I made Absolutely no hardware changes of any kind but Windows 7 does not recognize the internal 3.5in memory card reader I installed and hooked it up directly to the motherboard. It was working with XP and Vista without a problem. The lights come on but there is nothing showing in removeable storage in My Computer. I have had this memory card reader for 6 or 7 years now without any problems. I don't even know or remember the manufacturer. I can't even troubleshoot the device because it is not even remotely recognized. (I have an old printer that Canon will not develop new Vista or Win 7 drivers for it so I did a trouble shoot and Vista & Win 7 let me use it without any problems but only after it was recognized by the OS) It does not show up in the device manager either. Is there any way to force Windows 7 to recognize it?? Why did XP & Vista recognize it??

So, nothing is listed in the device manager? What happens if you put an SD card in the reader?

    Nothing

I sent a Private Message to an administrator (BRINK) and he replied that Windows 7 drivers were needed. Since the unit did not come with a drivers disc ... well you know the rest. I don't mind buying another external memory card reader but it doesn't seem like there are very many of them out there compatible with Windows 7. At least not yet anyways. I searched on New Egg, Sony & Amazon and the LIAN LI web site. And a Google Search. What really baffles me is if Vista could detect the device why can't Windows 7 ???

Because there are no drivers for it in the Windows 7 drive base. The manufacturer didn't provide anything to Microsoft. Something should be in the device manager - anything attached to the computer will be listed in there. Find the device with the ? or !, go to the details tab, and look at the hardware ids. Post them here.

I have a multi-card internal reader from Novatech which worked fine under XP/Vista, but which isn't recognised by W7. All I could do was remove it and designate it for an older machine. It was replaced with another one which W7 could get loaded, simple as that - as not every device has working drivers.

It does not show up in the device manager. I just looked. There are NO exclamation marks or question marks anywhere. Why don't you believe me?? No drivers were supplied when I bought the hardware. I never had a problem with XP or Vista recognizing it. Right now there are very little or almost no internal memory card readers that are compatible with Windows 7. Look on the New Egg web site and read some or all the reviews for memory card readers if you don't believe me. New Egg lists about 25 of them for sale. Check the specifications also. Not one I could find listed Windows 7 compatability. Was this a gross oversight by Microsoft?? How come Vista didn't have a single issue with mine or any memory card readers. So the drivers in Vista were not carried over to windows 7 ?? I think I will wait until a internal memory card reader is made for windows 7. I am in no big hurry anyway. I have a USB Memory card reader I can use in the mean time. This is not the first issue and certaintly not the last with windows 7. My motorola phone tools is not compatible either with windows 7. I called Motorola customer support and they are working on creating a set of working drivers but they do not know how long it will take them. We don't live in a perfect world. I still think Windows 7 is the best yet.
