Cannot download from camera via internal card reader

I have a Dell Inspiron 560 that has an internal card reader, supposedly available and noted under Device Manager >Drivers as
    Code:
Generic "type of card" USB Device
and all are shown as working.

Further down Device Manager in Portable Devices are
    Code:
    Canon DC (? F, somehow renamed:confused:), G, H and J
    all working.

I am unable to use the reader and have to use an old portable reader via a USB port.

Can some one suggest what is wrong and how it can be put right? Please!

Hi there ... Did your Card Reader ever work .. The reason i ask this is because there are a lot of reports about the Reader on the Dell site ... Some people even state that it came with the wrong cable ...

Yes, it did until a few months ago. As the reader ports is internal, and sits alongside two front USBs, I don't get the reference to "wrong cable".

Hi there .. A couple of questions for you ... Did you Reinstall Windows recently or when the issue started ? ... If you go into Disk Management does the Card Reader show ?

The problen has occurred before and recovered, but much more recently I have experienced troubles with BSODs that resulted in a new hard drive being installed by a local repairer, and before that I had reinstalled Windows.
Disk Management shows the OEM Partition, Recovery (I) and OS (C), then F, G, H, J all noted "no media" with card inserted, and CD Rom/DVD.

FWIW Reader in the original invoice is a 19 in 1, Part 385-10830.

Since my last post I have ploughed through numerous threads on Dell readers, most of which came to dead ends.

Oh dear, I think I should crawl in to a corner. I remembered that I had a number of cards (SD and XD) that we use in a Fuji bridge that takes both, my wife's Canon, and her old Pentax. Those cards all are seen by the reader.

I took a rubbish pic on my Fuji with the card. itself Fuji brand, and now the reader does see it. Strangely in Disk Management it is listed as Canon_DC in drive F.

I wonder if the problem may have arisen because we perhaps used the card in more than one camera?
