Thanks for the help. I got the scanner working using the suggested driver

The CanonToolbox buttons wont work on the front of the scanner but I guess you can't have everything.

For anyone wanting to install make sure you click the very small "download" link on the destination page. Not the advert for Vista drivers which does not solve the problem and installs software you have to pay for to use.
I have been to the site for your suggested driver, clicked the small Download which takes me to Mediafire.com and downloaded the DNA Canon LiDE50 x64 Driver.7z file. I am not the most techie of people, what do I do with this file as the .7z extension throws me?
Has anyone else got this to work? I asked Canon and they just say tough luck, buy a new scanner. Will not be buying any of their products in future with that sort of support.

Hi caz, You'll need to use this program to uncompress the .7z extensions - 7-Zip This is basically a different form of Winzip.

Download 7-Zip 4.65 (2009-02-03) for Windows: .msi file x64 file since you have Win 7 x64.

Also, you could try Vuescan from Hamrick if you can't find a driver for the scanner, though the cost of the software/driver will be $40 for the basic, $80 for the pro. There is a trial version to try for 30 days as well. Also the software does support the LiDE50.

    Good luck

Canon Lide50 under Windows 7 now working

    Thank you very much, Sygnus21.
I have never heard of that type of zip file but I downloaded the software, extracted the files and ran the setup.
    My scanner now works.

Maybe a little bit late for you, but maybe of interest for other people who run into the same problem:
I had the same problem. I found a link for a driver on this page:
http://www.webwhitenoise.com/item/20...0-x64-drivers/ I installed the driver and the scanner was recognized (its a non official driver which is not verified, so I do not know if it is dangerous to install).
After that you have to install the toolbox (canoscantoolbox) form the website.
Do not install a new version (e.g. 4.9) because this will give an error when scanning (invalid twain). Download the software 4.1 version from the canon site.
My scanner is up and running again.
I hope this will help other people who do not like to throw away good working devices because the manufacturer will not develop a new driver for it (this was almost my second scanner I have to throw away because of a new os).
Canon says the scanner cannot communicate in windows 7. It can.
