Smartcard reader issues  

This is the only major showstopper for me in using Seven 95%

ActivIdentity USB Reader V2
ActiveClient 6.1

Both work fine in Vista 64 on the same box in dual boot.

In Vista the driver used is the generic MS usbccid.sys driver version 6.0.6001.18000 dated 6/1/2006

In Seven there are 4 MS drivers all version 6.1.7000.0 dated 6/21/2006:
- scfilter.sys
- WUDFUsbccidDriver.dll
- winusb.sys
- WUDFRd.sys

In Device Manager status I get the "This device Cannot Start. (code 10)" message.

If I uninstall the device and plug it back in I can see that Windows sees an ActivCard USB reader V2 (shows up in "Other Devices" while drivers are trying to install) but the install fails for the Microsoft Usbccid smartcard Reader (WUDF). I have tried the latest drivers to no avail.

Any help would be appreciated.

The new Microsoft Smartcard class driver (WudfUsbccid.dll) supports both CCID and ICCD Smartcard devices. Because of this, it does a sanity check on the device type reported by the hardware. Unfortunately, the ActivCard reader is really a CCID reader but its firmware is reporting itself as an ICCD device. Because of this, the driver failed to start. This is a known issue to Microsoft and it is being addressed. In the mean time, you may want to download the driver from the ActivCard web site instead of using the Microsoft in-box class driver.

Thanks for the reply and at least its a known issue. I can't seem to force the install. The driver installer from Activcard is an MSI and I can't find the inf files to try to force an install.

Hmm, interesting ... The driver from ActivCard site doesn't work? In any case, you may want to try the old USB CCID driver from Microsoft Update then. This driver doesn't understand ICCD so it will blindly treat it as a CCID device which is exactly what it is.

having the same issue. tried downloading activcard drivers but with no luck, tried windows update catalog drivers with no luck. Funny thing is that the card reader installs fine on my x61t running win7 but not on my msi wind netbook ... strange!!

Would you tell me the hardware ID of your ActivCard reader? You can right click the device in device manager, click properties, select the "Details" tab and click Hardware ID. Would you also tell me the Compatible ID from the same place? Thanks.

Here is the information:

Clarification - I mistyped before. The card reader is not working on my main laptop either

These are compatible IDs, what about Hardware ID? Note that the problem of this reader is that it is reporting Prot_01 which means ICCD but in fact it should be CCID Prot_00. In any case, if you can send me your setup log file in your c:\windows\inf\setupapi.dev.log, I can get all the info from it. I am interested in seeing why the old usbccid.sys driver from Microsoft Update Catalog is not installing.

I have a similar issue with the internal reader Akasa AK-ICR-05, while an external reader from ACR seems to work a bit better.
