What were you hoping to accomplish with the 'ripping' of the WinXP CD?

I'd get the Windows XP Mode file and the special version of Windows XP Professional and follow the instructions to install.
Windows XP Mode - Microsoft Windows

The issues accompanying WinXP loss of support will also apply so be sure to read the page.

The WinXP has to be booted to so it can install and obviously that can't be done from Windows XP Mode.
Windows XP Mode is a lot like the older Microsoft Virtual PC.

    Just btw.,
Windows 7 XP Mode is an updated version of Virtual PC that includes a pre-configured version of 32bit Windows XP.
.. Something to consider, if you wanted x64 Windows XP.

The 64-bit version of Windows XP Professional [only] really didn't catch on with consumers, weren't many 64-bit programs available at the time. Even Microsoft didn't have a 64-bit version of Office until the 2010 version.

Unless you install another virtual machine package and install XP on that, Windows Virtual PC is part of Windows XP Mode. They are both required.
