I found the most concise solution here by Theodossiou. For expediency I will repost:

    "
It took me a while to make it work. Below I provide a detailed step by step approach to istalling the drivers and software for the CanoScan LiDE 35, in a Windows 7 (64 bit) environment.

    1. Download the drivers and software for CanoScan Lide 60 and Windows 7 (x64). Use the http below:

    Canon U.S.A. : Support & Drivers : CanoScan LiDE 60

    The driver file is: lide60vst6411111a_64en.exe
    The software file is: cstbwin4932en.exe

    2. Run (double click) the file: lide60vst6411111a_64en.exe
    3. Connect the CanoScan Lide 60 on one of your PC’s USB ports
    4. Click on the 1) Start button, 2) Control Panel and 3) Device Manager
    5. Double click on the icon CanoScan under Other Devices and choose Update Driver
    6. Choose Browse my Computer for Driver Software
    7. Proceed with the option Let me Pick from a List of Devise Drivers on my Computer
    8. Click on 1) Imaging Devises and then 2) Canon Inc.
    9. Select 1) CanoScan Lite 60, 2) Next and press 3) Yes
    10. Wait for a while until the installation is completed (the relevant message will appear on the screen)
    11. Install the software for the scanner (double click on the file cstbwin4932en.exe and follow the install menu)
    12. In your programs directory, choose Canon and the Canon Toolbox 4.9

    FYI

In the CanoScan Toolbox some buttons like "Copy" and "Mail" will work on their own, but others like "Scan" or "PDF" will still want you to point to an external program.

For this, I was still able to install the ArcSoft PhotoStudio 5.5 that came on the original Lide 35 CD under Windows 7 64bit just fine. Then for those toolbox buttons just specify this as the external program.

When I attempt to scan using the Canoscan Toolbox, I get a message "Specifies the program where the scanned image is transferred". I have no idea what this means.
This is just the Toolbox asking you to point to external software when you use some specific buttons like "Scan" or "PDF". Try a different toolbox button that does not require "external program" (like "Mail" or "Copy") and see if that works on its own. It should.

Otherwise, using "Scan" passes the image over to another program so you could manipulate it further. You will still need to have/install such a program (like PhotoStudio 5.5 that came with the original CD) and point to it.

    Hi there
What's wrong in keeping around a Virtual XP machine for this sort of stuff -- you could even have the VM on a USB device if you don't use the scanner that often.

Don't junk serviceable good working equipment just because there aren't drivers for it in the new OS -- this is just Blackmail by manaufacturers trying to force you into upgrades when none are necessary.

You've got an old XP machine so use the disk for creating an XP vm. The XP VM will run EASILY on only 512 MB and it will boot quite quickly. VM's these days can run very well indeed on modern hardware --even on small netbooks you could run a vm or two.

VMWARE player is free and fairly self explanatory on how to create and run a basic virtual machine. (VBOX is also free) but I think if you aren't used to VM's then VMware player is a better bet).

As it's only for your scanner you don't even need to bother with any OS upgrades etc -- the VM should fit easily on even a 4 GB USB stick.

Actually I have a few old devices --that would cost a LOT of money to upgrade -- so I'm quite happy to keep a VM for these. The manufacturer has long since gone out of business but the equipment is still robust and works fine. So why ad to Landfill by junking stuff and depleting your Bank account at the same time when an easy FREE solution is available.

    Cheers
