I've got no smart doctor, my cpu and ram are not overclocked, and that fine gentlemen on the asus boards would happen to be myself. I was using vista at one point, but I thought upgrading to 7 might fix the problem. Although if it helps here are some basic specs
    i7 extreme cpu
    6 gb RAM
dual Nvidia 285 GTX in SLI
    P6T Deluxe V2 Motherboard
    1 TB Harddrive

I would try the nvidia forums, and see if there are SLI problems. What are your power supply specs - you have a high end PC did you get a decent power supply with it - more than likely you did, but worth mentioning.

If you could send a picture of device manager it would help.

If microsoft cant install the HD audio driver you get the feeling its not enabled in the bios which is unlikely - i guess you have checked. If there isnt a device in device manager with a yellow asterisk next to it (unknown device) its a good chance.

If nothing else works I would pull one of those 285 cards out - install the latest nvidia drivers (if need be), and see if sound max will install - its a process of elimination. Please dont do this without a second opinion, and some evidence from the nvidia forums it maybe the cause.
