Hi welcome to the forum

ok when you use the onboard vga sound works when using onboard in play back devices do the speakers show up? when you installed the graphics card which what graphic card did you put in? probably has an audio chip on the card. when the graphics card is installed go to bios and make sure audio is enabled.

If your monitor isn't HDMI compatible then you don't need the sound driver of the graphic card so try to uninstall the drivers for the graphic card then make sure your sound works then reinstall the graphic card drivers, make sure you select custom installation and untick the sound driver and see if that works

There is a good possibility that the bios is disabling the onboard audio when it detects the audio on the video card. If that is what it is doing and based on the fact that your computer is a HP, there is also a very good possibility that you can't do anything about it as HP has/had a very bad habit of removing/hiding the option to enable/disable the onboard audio' with it defaulting to auto.

If that is the case the only work around I have seen for it is to add a sound card.
