Updating USB3 controller driver  

I tried to update my USB3 controller to the latest level of driver, using the update from the ASUS site for my motherboard (as recommended by the supplier of my PC). The install was an Intel program, which left me without a driver for my mouse/keyboard, requiring a System Restore...

Is it a good idea to try the "Update Driver..." button in the "Intel(R) USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller" properties (inside Device Manager)?

I've contacted Intel for their suggestions, but no response so far. I suspect I'd have done better when my email address was Swifty@uk.ibm.com ...

I downloaded the patch from the ASUS site. It was just a package that contained an Intel program which patched USB drivers. It worked by deleting the existing drivers and installing the newer ones. It ran rather slowly on my system (the SSD C: drive normally makes things very fast). When I tried to find out what was happening, I discovered that my keyboard/mouse had stopped working. This was before the patch program failed to install one of the drivers, and aborted. I assumed it was because the USB drivers had been deleted - that's what the patch program said it was doing.

The Drivers from the Motherboard Website are out of date ...

Thanks for that link. I'm sure it will work, but I'll leave it 'till tomorrow morning, when I'm at my intellectual best (not much of a claim these days). Since I'll be applying the patch via Device Manager, presumably I'd be able to avail myself of the "Rollback" button if it causes me problems. It's taken me a couple of days of tinkering to get my new USB3 device working (a Drobo 5D), and Im comforted that I should be able to get back to where I am now, should things go wrong.

I get very tense updating drivers, having had many disasters doing this to OS/2 systems in the past. I sometimes see hardware updates being applied by Windows Update, and now I've seen how back-level my BIOS/drivers are, I'm wondering why Windows Update doesn't cover this. Too many different combinations of hardware, presumably.

The readme.txt from the suggested patch says to check the chipset. HWiNFO says "Intel Z77 (Panther Point DH)", the closest match in the readme is "Intel(R) 7 Series/C216 Chipset Family (Panther Point PCH)"

Is this "close enough for government work", as Stephen King would say?

I do not update Drivers unless there is a performance issue ...


I see there is a BIOS update for your Motherboard dated the 2014/05/07...


I see no reason to Update that either as it does not state what improvements that it would make ...

Yes i did look at your Chipset it should work ....
