Carwiz is correct but if you still have issue you might try this.

Browser to the folder c:\epson If it is there is folder called EPSON12242_TWAIN5_DRIVER_571A look in the directory for sub folder, if there is one point windows to correct folder.

If it still has problem finding it, rename the epson folders with extremely long names to shorter names within the c:\espon directory. Good Luck.

CarWiz,

>You might check the manual. Many times the software and drivers are loaded before connecting the device, up to a point. Then
>the device is plugged in and the install finishes.

Yeah, I have tried that. I made sure that the scanner was not connected, then ran the installer. The installer itself seems to run fine. But software like Paint and PS can't seem to find it.

>Most will also have you cancel the Windows attempt I don't really get the big pop up that says Windows is installing any drivers.

When I plug in the scanner I just get an entry in Device Mgr -> Others. That disappears when I unplug the scanner.

>The only way I've gotten around a bad install is to delete the device and reinstall it--Using the instructions. Done that.

Groze,

>c:\epson If it is there is folder called EPSON12242_TWAIN5_DRIVER_571A

I tried shortening the name.
Still no love. There are only setup files in the epson twain install folder, no .inf files, as such:
_Setup.dll, data1.cab, data1.hdr, data2.cab, ISSetup.dll, layout.bin, setup.exe, setup.ini, setup.inx

The bottom line is the scanner worked in my previous XP installation.

As I remember it, I have had it working in my new Win 7 installation, in the past. (Same computer / hardware). Something must have happened to my Win 7 config at some point which is causing the problem. Don't know what though.

You may have already tried this.

Since you say there is a setup.exe. Keep the scanner unplugged. Install the drivers using setup.exe and see if it will complete, if it does reboot system. Now plug-in your scanner to see if it works.

Now, if setup.exe won't start, right click on setup.exe choose compatibly tab, change settings for all users, check run this program in compatibly mode for Windows Vista Service pack 2, click apply, then ok, then ok again.

Groze,

I have run the setup.exe program multiple times. It always says that it completes successfully. I have also run it in "Administrator Mode". No difference.

I went to the Properties Dialog, checked "Run as Administrator" and selected the Vista compatibility mode.

Followed your steps above.

No difference.

This is all I can think of and you may have already tried this, right click my computer. Choose properties, click on advance system settings, click on hardware tab. Device installation. Choose yes if not already chosen. Click save changes, click ok.

Open up device manager, right click on the scanner if listed and choose search automatically for drivers.

It was already set to "Yes".

It only shows up in the "Other" section. Never under scanners.

Groz,

Disabled AV, no difference.

If you haven't already done so, open device manager back up.

Still right click on device shown in other section and choose search automatically for driver. Windows will fix the location & name in device manager if it installs correctly.

Yeah, did that multiple times.
But this brings us back to my original post.
When I right click and try to update I get this:
Windows encountered a problem installing the driver software for your device
Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error attempting to install it.
EPSON Perfection1250
The system cannot find the file specified.

Forget all that Windows DVD, device manager, properties, right clicking stuff. It's not going to install that way. The file you downloaded is a self extracting zip file. After it's downloaded, run it! It should start a Setup program and install the driver(s).

Here's what is in the zip file.
