Having installed a new version of Windows 7... which doesn't have ethernet drivers.... and cannot access internet...
my partner has now found the 3 recovery cds that were made on the initial first installation of Windows 7.... would these recovery cds now work with this different installation of Windows 7?

They should work assuming they are not faulty in some way. And of course a recovery is never a 100% guaranteed successful process.

But they would take you back to the condition as of when the PC was purchased, which may be inferior to your recently installed version.

I'd search the link below for the Ethernet driver for your model in hopes I could salvage your most recent install rather than rely on the recovery discs.

IF using recovery cds how important is it to disconnect all external drives or what would happen if they were left connected during this recovery process?

I've never used recovery CDs, but I can't think of a reason why you'd want to take a chance by leaving anything connected other than monitor, mouse, and keyboard. Why take a risk that it might matter? Why risk confusing Windows or yourself?

    You said Packard Bell.

Now you say "imedia s3800" and "dell".

It's a little tough to say what you are actually dealing with considering that confusion.

Are we talking about 1, 2, or 3 different computers?

My apologies.. When Windows loads it says packard bell.. and computer says Packard Bell...

on the computer info it shows.. imedia s3800
    INTEL r CORE
system info dell intel (R) core (TM) i3cpu 2.93ghz (so I think it is just the processor that is Dell)
