If your speakers are connected properly and your drivers properly installed, this is an indication that

    a. your speakers are faulty
    b. speaker ports are faulty

    I suspect a driver issue.

Since you just purchased the PC, you could return to the retailer for an evaluation.

when you purchased your PC, did it come with a driver disc?? If so you can try to reinstall the drivers from there....

Another thought - plug your speakers into the other colored ports. There are reports here at SF about this.

Hi Tuck, welcome to the forum.
We have similar motherboards and when I first built my rig I had a similar issue. How I solved my issue was to set my speaker set up to 2 speker/2 channel, another thing I did was to switch to HD in my device manager.
Last was when I set up my MOBO I had to attach the HD pin frrom the front panel (and its extremely small and delicate) onto the MOBO to the exact port. As I said its a small detail but if its not connected you will get no sound. Attached is 2 screen shots of my device manager and drivers.

Tuck, I once had a problem when I installed a new ATI board. The sound defaulted to the HDMI port, and I had nothing on the "normal" sound port. I had to unistall the HD audio driver and install the (in my case Realtek, I think) audio drivers. My system is quite different from yours, I see you have onboard HDMI so it is harder to believe it would be the problem, but if everything else fails...

You have the windows default driver installed
You must have the specific driver for your card installed

Here is your driver from Asus's website:
    ASUSTeK Computer Inc.
Just click on 'download', then 'audio'
    Click on global to download
