Yep that's what I thought. Having taken apart three different laptops from four different manufacturers (Toshiba, DELL, HP and SONY) to replace LCD display screens and DC-in Power Jacks, I know the horrors that lurk inside with the myriad of tiny screws and plastic catches - not to mention the incrediblt small, fiddly and easily-damaged wires that connect to things like the WiFi card!!
Meanwhile, going to try Derek's alternative Realtek driver csutil-20101004160138.zip and see if that makes a difference. Also going to try installing Windows 7 64-bit from my genuine retail box (using my colleague's CoA licence key which is just barely readable) and see if anything happens on that side.
