    System Won't Boot. ACPI.sys is corrupted


    Hello All,

    I have a Toshiba laptop running 64-bit Windows 7 which will no longer boot due to system error.
    This laptop was running fine until I attempted to download Kaspersky Internet Security.
    Kaspersky recognized another Anti-Virus on the laptop, Avast, and required it be removed before installing Kaspersky Internet Security.
    I chose to remove Avast, and when the laptop required a reboot, it failed to load into Windows. Windows attempted to fix the problem but could not. Further investigation of the error details stated that acpi.sys was corrupted.
    I inserted a Windows 7 installation disc and attempted to fix it via the Repair option, to no avail. I also copied acpi.sys from my desktop onto a flash drive, and copied it from the flash drive onto the laptop. This too failed to fix the problem.
    I also attempted to reload Windows 7 from the installation disc, but when I chose 'Upgrade', the system returned with a message "The computer started using the Windows installation disc. Remove the installation disc and restart your computer so that Windows starts normally". I cannot perform the recommended operation because Windows fails to load normally!
    I am reluctant to use the 'Custom' install, but I may be required to do so. If I do, I will post those results.

    I am suspicious that Avast may have corrupted the acpi.sys driver upon removal.


    I had performed this same operation on my desktop without issue. Kaspersky recognized that I was running AVG and required that AVG be removed, which I did via the Kaspersky interface to the AVG. Upon removal, a restart was required, and my desktop system rebooted without issue.
    Any help is appreciated.

    Hello mate now being a long time Kaspersky user myself I know how touchy it is with other AV's and I am wondering how did you uninstall the Avast?? did you use the removal tool or what? https://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility

    Another way if you can get some sort of boot going is to check the registry for any Avast entries still left in there.

    Have you tried a safe mode boot? if not try and there is this to have a read through.

    When Kaspersky identified Avast, Kaspersky's interface to remove Avast was presented. I used this interface to remove Avast. Upon the removal process, a reboot was required. Again, I used the interface presented to me to reboot the system. At this point, the system would no longer boot into Windows 7. Therefore, any interaction with the Windows Operating System was impossible, for example, no ability to boot into safe mode.
    This morning, I booted from the Installation CD and chose "Custom" install. This process got the laptop up and running in Windows 7 and created the Windows.old directory.

    Ok mate well if it is up and running again I would be taking a look in the registry entries for any Avast entries because it is always something I do even after running the unique removal tool that most of the AV's put out.

    Now if you don't know where to check just say and we can lead you through the steps.

    Now there are ways of using the Windows.old files see this Windows.old folder - Restore into a new installation
