Laptop winbook and pen drive USB driver not installing properly

Suddenly a Winbook external hard drive for my W520 laptop is not showing up in Explorer but is seen by Device Manager. This was after I disconnected it to use the laptop elsewhere. Now when I plug it in, I'm told the drivers are being installed but then the install fails. Looking at it in Device Manager indicates the driver didn't install properly. If I try to update I'm told I have the newest driver.

Looking around the net, I see versions of this problem that people solve by
- Disconnect the device, uninstalling the driver and then reconnecting the device. The drivers install, yay. Nope
- uninstall the driver and then shut the system down for X minutes, including d/c the battery. Start, reconnect the devices. Nope.
- System Restore. A puzzler here, because it's not able to restore to an earlier point, of which there are several before the problem arose.

Other non-storage USB devices are fine, but pen drives don't show up. I can plug the HD into another comp and it's readable.

The drive does not show up in Disk Management, but is showing up in Device Manager.
