Can't install ANY printers error 0x0000007b

I have a HP Elitebook laptop on a works domain, I am an administrator on the laptop.

I am unable to install printers, the network printers were installed but one stopped working then disappeared, however when I try installing it again, it finds it on the network print server fine, tries to download the driver then stops with an error: 0x0000007b.

There are two printers in our office, a Xerox WorkCenter 7835 and a HP LaserJet Pro 400.

Both stop with the same error when trying to install.

I have downloaded the specific drivers for Windows 7 64bit and tried to manually install the printers using their IP addresses, as soon as it gets to the installing the driver, it stops with the error.
When installing the HP driver it allows you to install a dynamic printer, which doesn't ask you to connect to a specific printer, but when you select it in a program to print to will ask which printer you want to use each time, that won't install either.

Our IT support are stumpped and want to format and start again, however this means a day or two or reinstalling all programs after its done, any suggestions before doing this?

Cheers!!

EDIT: Just to add, this is not just when trying to connect to the printers on the network - I have tried connecting to the HP via a USB and downloaded the drivers direct from HP and installed them. This still fails when trying to install the printer driver.
