Same Problem but Using W7 Ultimate 32-bit

When trying to install the Canon driver dated 16-Oct-09, it succeeds in installing both the fax and scanner drivers but not the printer driver.

I have waited up to 20 minutes for the USB port to be "recognised" but nothing.

After this failed instal, I can send faxes and scan pages but I can't print.

Any & all help greatly appreciated but please note I'm using the 32-bit version of windows not the 64-bit version.

I sent an email request for help to Canon Tech Support 2 days ago but so far no reply!

    Thanks.

I love google...yes, the fix is CORRECTLY described on page 1.

A). Click ADD PRINTER....Next select WHICH PORT its on...this is the "trick"!...select the VIRTUAL USB PORT....hit NEXT (if you are trying standard "printer port 1" that is your problem, must be virtual usb port.

B), go thru and have Windows update its list of drivers, takes several minutes, don't bother going through Canon its not necessary. Once you see MP780 (or etc) listed, select it, all works from there.

I had tried from Canon...but the trouble-shooter during Canon's driver install process correctly identified that the port couldn't listen for the printer...just wasn't sure why the correct port wasn't in use or how to change it...but now its all working fine (test page printed etc).

Thank you Ishahmael for posting the correct solution to what appears to be a common problem for us who own Canon MP780 printers. I was pulling my hair out before I found your posting. Thank you again.

I am installing a Canon PIXMA MP780 onto Windows 7. I have been on the Canon website and downloaded the driver but I still get a message saying this version of Windows is not supported by the driver and installation fails. I only want to get the MP Navigator and MP Driver on but it fails even choosing these two. Any suggestions?

I tried all the steps mentioned above but the driver installation didn't detect the printer. Finally, I decided to re-image Windows 7 (easy since I haven't installed much already and HP has a nice system recovery feature installed).

After this I made sure the USB cable was disconnected and printer turned off. Then downloaded the printer driver from the Canon website and installed. When prompted, I plugged in the cable then turned on the printer...waited a while for Windows to install the driver, but finally it finished and the Canon window disappeared. Success!

I'm pretty sure my problem is that the first time I plugged the printer in thinking that Win7 would find the driver out on the internet and everything would be OK. Turns out that's the kiss of death. You must install the Canon drivers first and then plug the printer in.
