Your absolutely right, you do need to install the drivers. In fact Im fairly certain this is part of rcdavis's problem (and I've shown him how to fix it with my post) Unfortunately, once a Printer is installed if you try to print over a network the printer won't print. Why? Because the PC is trying to call the Local Printer, which isn't there. Hence why you need to set up a "Network Local Port" so the PC knows where its dialing.

Think of it like calling someone in the same apartment building as you. At one point, you had an internal line where you could just press a number and it would connect you. Now though, that person has moved, so if you try and dial the same number, you don't get a reply. So you need their new number, so you know where to dial.

I forgot to mention,that if things were so messed up,(since people paid us €€ & $$ to do the job):
we completely removed all old drivers, unplugged all printers and installed EVERYTHING from the bottom up.

If it were under XP,Vista or 7,there are many ways to do the job,but 1 thing is 100% sure..you have to start all over again or else i would not give you any warranty,for there have been maid mistakes..we're humans, all of us.
And computers are made by our hands so don't expect them to be flawless...they're not..

Anyways good luck....with all the good tips here i am sure,that you will succeed..

I found that the website now has the x64 version:
Service & Support - Support & Drivers - Canon Canada Inc.

Remove the printer and uninstall the drivers, then use the drivers from the above location.. the installation bubble in the bottom right hand corner pops up. Click on that and "skip" any of the attempts that windows makes to aquire the latest drivers using windows update. That will allow the system to install the drivers correctly.

I experienced the same problems when trying to install on a Win7 x64 laptop an MP780 connected to a WXP x32 PC, but the suggestions in this thread did not word for me.

The issue appears to be that the Win 7 x64 driver package on Canon's U.S. web site only contains the scanner driver - the printer driver has been omitted! (Incidentally, Canon's U.K. web site only has Win 7 x32 drivers - described as the Win 7 driver - no x64 drivers are present.)

I did succeed in installing the printer locally, making use of the downloaded Win7 x64 drivers, with the laptop connected to the printer by USB. The scanner driver installed without any problem, and Windows Update intervened during the installation process, and automatically downloaded and installed the printer driver.

I then tried to install the network printer driver on the laptop (with the printer now connected to the network PC). The Add Printer dialog found the printer, but could not install it ("No driver found"). So then I followed the Add Local Printer workaround, as detailed elsewhere in this thread. I tried to create a local port, giving it the printer's network address as the printer name. The name was accepted, but when I was asked to select the appropriate driver, the MP780 printer driver was not listed.

The solution to this problem was to download from the Canon site the WXP x64 (yes, WXP) drivers. The extracted files included an MP780pr.inf. I tried the network installation again, and this time when Win 7 was unable to find the driver, I browsed to the extracted MP780pr.inf file. Win 7 accepted it, and installed the printer. It is now functioning perfectly.

pdterp's solution works for me. I have a desktop server - WinXP 32 bit with the Canon MP780 attached - called desktopgw.

I installed the latest drivers on the XP machine and set it up to SHARE - NOTE the share name - mine is called CanonMP7.

On my laptop - Dell M6500 Win7 64bit - I added a printer, adding a new local port - called \\desktopgw\CanonMP7

Rendering print jobs on Client computers (under sharing on the Win7 machine) was automatically checked for me.

Works like a charm - it even downloaded the right drivers for me. I never had to manually install any Canon drivers on my Win7 machine.

Hello

I have also a MP780 and Win7 64bit. Should I use the windows driver or the mp driver from canon? I don't know if the mp driver from Canon also supports 64bit Win7. See

With the driver from Windows is there also a scanner driver installed?

My additional problem was that I could not get Windows to update the driver list. I found the answer to that problem in another forum, and am copying here, hoping to save others the ++ weeks of frustration I have had.

I have found an answer on another thread that works. I'll copy it here for anyone that is following this thread. Apparently there is a bug in a recent update to Win7.
1. Open Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del)
2. Click Sevices Tab and then Services Button (Bottom Right)
3. Under Name find "Windows Update"
4. Right click "Windows Update" and select Stop. do not close
5. Open Window Exploper and browse to C:\Windows
6. Delete the Folder "SoftwareDistribution"
7. Go back to Servies, Right click "Windows Update" and select Start
There are two downsides to this solution:
1) Windows Update itself will start over from scratch the next time you launch it and you will loose all of your Windows Update history. You will also need to re-hide any hidden updates.
2) Its a pain in the you-know-what if you have more than one to do.
Here's hoping Microsoft gets this fixed.

Once I got the updated printer list (thanks to JohnSchaefer316!), then my Canon MP780 printer finally installed (thanks to ishahmael!). <phew>

ive followed all the steps to everything ive read and still cannot install this damn printer on my 7x64.

the one issue that seems odd is when i update the driver list i dont see a 780 or any 700 series printer drivers.

Have you tried downloading the WXP x64 drivers (as well as the Win7 driver), extracting the MP780pr.inf file, then when installing the printer browsing to it?

Hi. Know this is an old issue but just though I'd share.
Needed to connect work laptop (still Win7) to personal home printer MP780. Policies on work laptop prohibits Windows Updates by non admins so could not get printer installed that way.

I downloaded the Windows XP 64bit drivers from Canon Support Website.
I downloaded the Windows 7 64bit drivers from Canon Support Website.
I downloaded the MP Navigator 1.06 for Windows 7 64bit from Canon Support Website.

Run the Windows XP 64bit installation setup.
Do not run the Win7 installation, but extract the zip into a folder.
Go to "Device Manager" and find the MP780 scanner device. Upgrade it and locate the folder with the Win7 drivers inf you extracted.
You can then run the MP Navigator installation.

Printer and Scanner software will be working now.
