Just a quick update - this link has worked, I now have sound, woo yeah!
It's now a shame that Media Portal and the MythTV software I use aren't working in W7

What's that sound? oh yeah, it's me putting OpenSuse10.3 back on

Seriously guys, thanks for the help with getting Audio working but as the most important (to me) bits of software aren't working on W7, it's back to Linux where I know they work.

Perhaps I may venture back into Windows later in the future but for now, I bid you all farewell ... before I go though, I'd like to express a hearty thank you for the prompt replies to those who helped me in my "mini adventure" into Windows land!

How to install windows catalog files?

How do you install the windows catalog files i downloaded the .cab and i extracted it and the files within were

    migrate.dll
    smwdm.sys
    smwdmCH5
    WDMSTUB.sys
    smx

Should i paste these files into a specific soundmax folder or windows folder? or right click one of the files and click install?

Is there file extension on the smx file?

They can;t be pasted, they need to be "installed" to work properly.I folder options choose show files entensions for known types.

If the smx file has an .inf extension, go to Device Manager, choose sound, video, and game controllers and choose SoundMax and then update driver software. Now locate the smx.inf file and double-click on that.

No, you need to download a .exe file and run setup.exe or a zip file which you can extract to see if there is an .inf file included.
