Hmm that is strange, my printer is connected via usb, and it works perfectly fine. I get updates on my ink status and no flashing orange light. Did you try rebooting the printer? Or holding down the power button for a reset?

@Dannyboy2005, try switching your USB port. I noticed with my PC my front usb ports are 1.1 and the back is 2.0. When I connect the printer to my front ports it shows that it picks up, but then does not work. Once I plug the USB Port in the back of my PC everything works perfectly fine.

As for double sided printing, I dont think this is a function on this printer, I was never able to do it (Not even in XP.) unless you manually re-position the printed paper for a back print.

What I am sharing is what worked with me from experience, this type of fix just may be one of those subjective type repairs. Keep trying multiple drivers until you get one that works. As for now I can only truly comment on the 460 drivers and the 990 drivers as they are the ones I have tested before.

    Thank you.

It installs but it dosnt print.
Also make sure that you went through the "Add a Printer" option in control panel as listed above, simply connecting the printer will not detect the driver. When you plug in via-usb and go through the add a printer option, make sure you select the Port as a USB (Mine is listed as USB001.) and not COMM or LPT.

    HP DeskJet 6122

    Hello,

I recently upgraded from Vista 64-bit to Windows 7 64-bit. I am using the HP DeskJet 990c drivers to run my printer. It is printing but ever since I upgraded to Windows 7 my colors are not correct. The output on the printer is missing some color, even on the test page that prints. I replaced the color and black ink cartridges and still the same problem. Here's the kick, I bought a new PC for my mom, and she has the same printer (6122) and her printer is missing color too! They actually have 2 of these 6122 printers and both of them print the same way.

I am at a total loss as to what is wrong here. It is NOT the printers because I have proof that 3 of these 6122 printers all have problems printing the right colors in Windows 7 64-bit.

Any suggestions? I'd hate to have to buy 2 new printers just because of Windows 7 64-bit OS.

[ Edit: I am going to try the HP Deskjet 460/460c drivers tonight to see if that changes anything. ]

[ Edit: 460 series printer drivers didn't change a thing, same problem. I just spent 2.5 hours on chat tech support with HP trying everything under the sun and nothing worked. Not even a supervisor could help. Their solution, buy a newer HP printer! Yeah right! I am extremely dejected, what a rip! ]

    Thanks.

After way too many hours spent on this, I have decided to throw in the towel and throw out my HP Deskjet 6122. Actually, I will put it in a garage sale or give it away to someone that is not running Windows 7.

Simple fix if computer already recognizes USB device

    Hi all:

I encountered the same essential problem as all of you - my DeskJet 6122 would not function as such on the Windows 7 OS - though the exact nature of the problem and the ultimate solution differed somewhat from those listed in this thread.

I initially plugged the printer in with other peripherals before I turned on my new computer (Dell Inspiron series) for the first time. Not advisable in any case, but whatever. My computer actually recognized the printer, but it was listed a driverless 'unknown device.' Obviously, uninstalling it and adding a new printer/installing a proxy driver wasn't going to solve the problem. My solution was as follows:

    1) Open 'properties' dialogue for the device.
    2) Navigate to 'hardware' tab
    3) Select 'USB Printing Support' and double click or select 'Properties,' new dialogue opens
    4) On 'general' tab of new dialogue, hit 'Change Settings' button, another new dialogue opens
    5) Hit 'driver' tab - you should now see the 'update driver' button active, press it to open the driver mgmt dialogue
    6) Select the compatible device (printer) and driver (HP 990c), click 'Next.' Printer should now work fine, though it will be named 'HP 990C' (which shouldn't matter, since the functionality of the printer is circumscribed by the 990C driver anyway).

I stress that this worked only because my computer recognized the printer as some kind of device when I first plugged it in; if your computer doesn't recognize any USB input from the device when you plug it in, then I submit that's a different (and deeper) problem than what this approach aims to solve.

    Good luck!

Thanks for the information JohnQPublic. I get stuck on step 6. When I click the "Update Driver" button at the end of step 5, I get a dialog "Update Drive Software - USB Printing Support" and my only 2 options are "Search automatically for updated drive software" and "Browse my computer for driver software". Oh well, it was worth a shot.
