Hey Gardenerbob check out this post to see if someone else had your problem. I have to caution that itís rather long as it was started in Jan 2009. Anyway itís where I got the info to create the fix you see here.

Good luck.

Thanks Sygnus, for all your help.
I think I have spent enough time on this for the present and will use the 32 bit laptop.
This is really weird,I seem to be the only person with this situation. I am sure I will get it to work someday, but for now, I need a rest.

Out of curiosity did you use the Vista Nikon Scan 4.0.3 software?

Yup, I did everything you listed. I even say a post on Nikon Help pages that said to eliminate some Registry entries before reinstalling Nikon Scan. Still no go.

Do you think I should delete the driver as well as the software? Does the order of installation matter. (ie. Delete software- reinstall software but keep the updated driver)-could that be the cause?

I have a feeling there is something that is corrupted from an old installation that is not letting Nikon Scan work properly. I think I'll open up a tech request and say I'm running Vista and the program freezes. Maybe this has happened before.....
Thanks Again for all your help and ideas

You could uninstall the Nikon Scan software and start over, but looking at everything you supplied, it appears the software did install correctly, and the inf file I supplied works.

You also said Vuscan works without issue, and the procedures works with the scanner on the other system. So this tells me the scanner is in working order, you’re following the procedures and they work on another system. So I say it’s some type of conflict with something on the problem system. What? I don’t know….

What I woun't do is delete any registry entries, or even modify the registry as it's not necessary, and goes counter to what I posted. In addition you could do more harm than good.

You could try tricking Nikon into helping you, but bear in mind that Vista and 7 have different ways of working, so while he's looking at A you'd be looking a B. In addition to that, they also don't support Vista 64-bit.

I'm at a loss in this point in time. Since you know your system better than me if you think of something let me know.

Good luck.

The registry edit was on the Nikon site. Thankfully nothing seems to be amiss as all the other Nikon programs are running as they should.
Yup, there is definitely something on my system that is causing a conflict.
If I get the energy, I'll try to install on my business computer. It also runs Win 7 64bit. If it works on that, then I know my photoedit PC has something that it shouldn't.

Once Again, Thank You for all the help and time you've given. Not only for myself, but for all the Nikon Coolscan owners. It's a shame Nikon doesn't even let Nik do something with Nikon Scan (since they seem to writing alot of Nikon's software). Seems kinda mean spirited to loyal Nikon owners....

LS5000 loads as a usb disk drive

I have the LS5000 (coolscan 5000ED) usb version and have recently changed my OS from winXp 32bit to win7 64bit and the scanner automatically loads as a disc drive E and F, and will not accept a driver change, as I get the response "that the best matched driver is already loaded" or something similar. So win 7 thinks it is something other than a scanner and will not let me change the driver...I have followed this thread from page 1 and have tried the procedure posted from sygnus21 and am curious if anyone else has had this problem...am also a user of vuescan and have contacted Edhammrick about this as I was getting the same results with Vuescan (scanner nor found) and he could not help....

That's really not possible. The only way Windows can load something with a letter is if that item IS a drive (hard drive, thumb drive, external drive). The scanner is non of those so it will never get a drive letter. That will also explain why you can't change the driver. In short you are messing with the wrong item!

Please see this post for what it is you're looking for.... Getting your Nikon Coolscan to work on W7 x64

Also please be aware that you can't mix and match my procedures with others. I can only speak for my procedures.... no one else's.

Let me know.
