Getting your Nikon Coolscan to work on W7 x64  

Hi,
No luck with Coll-Scan V ED on W7 Any reason why?
I checked the scanner.inf file and it does contain LS-50. I tried copying this to the 64 list but no luck.
Any idea why?

As the first page says, older Coolscans are not supported in this fix. Sorry.

As the first page says, older Coolscans are not supported in this fix. Sorry.

I have a Coolscan IV (LS-40), even older than your Coolscan V (LS-50), and I just followed the instructions from message #1 that sygnus21 provided. The scanners.inf file it describes and links to looks like it should support both those scanners. It worked for me with W7 64 and W8 64 so I guess my only suggestion is that you try it again, being careful to follow the directions. Good luck.

Thanks for the info on W8. I've yet to get a copy, let alone try it. Guess I'm not sold on it yet.

And yeah, there are posts here saying the older scanners work, but I think/thought the file needed to be modified. If not, could you let me, and the other person know if this is true or not?

And yes, following directions is of the utmost importance.

I'm not sure what you mean when you say you "tried copying this to the 64 list" with no luck. The instructions in message #1 don't talk about doing anything like that so I'm not sure exactly what you were doing. Follow the instructions in message #1 carefully. They work for my LS-40 and there's every reason to believe they should then also work for your LS-50. I just tried them again on a fresh W7 64-bit installation to double-check that I didn't have to do anything unusual.

I'm not sold on W8 either, but it was a free upgrade from W7 for me so I took the plunge.

But to answer your question, my LS-40 Coolscan IV is working with the Nikon software and the scanners.inf file that you provided, unmodified.

Since I'm currently using W8 and I wanted to double-double check that the driver installation procedure worked on W7, a few minutes ago I fired up a Win 7 64-bit computer that had never had any Nikon hardware or software installed, followed the procedure you very nicely documented in message #1 and the LS-40 is now working just fine there too.

I've been meaning to get W8, but at this point I have an opportunity to get it for free. Just need my school to authorize my download. Have to wait till after the holidays though. Either way I'll have a copy before the end of Jan so it's just a matter of spending 39 buck, or getting it free. In the end I'll probably wind up with both.

At any rate, I too am at a loss of what Lucisussman is talking about when he says he tried copying???

a user explained that he had to modify the .inf file already modified by SteelChn,
in order to make his scanner work.
SteelChn, then, "officialy" added this modification in his own version.
I think that the .inf file quoted in this thread is now the last version, but I am not sure.
In this 'last' version, mark 'Nikon LS-50' (for mark V?) as mark 'Nikon LS-40' are mentionned in the [Models] section.
The user made a "copy" from a section [Models] to a section [Models.ntamd64]
or, may be, he added new lines for 'firewire' scanners (for a LS-4000 model, I don't remember precisely).

However, it is not clear whether the scanners have to be declared in the 64 or in the 32 (default) section ?
For reason of compatibility, the driver is to be put in x86 driver directories, so 64 seems not necessary...
For my scanner LS-5000 it worked with the declaration in [Models.ntamd64] section, but I am not convinced it is necessary. Some of the problems I mentionned on W8 (which adds constraints with signed option activated) are perhaps due to that.
For instance, Nikon LS-40 is in the [Models] section, and it seems to work. And it is also in the [Models.ntamd64]
section !
Perhaps Lucisusman has to check that he has the 'good' [last] version for .inf.
In addition, he has to use the NikonScan 4.0.3 driver ( NKScnUSD.dll ? or the very one corresponding to his model)
Perhaps Lucisussman could try the .inf version without modifying it, that is, with driver declared only in the section
[Models]
"Nikon LS-50" = USBScanner,USB\Vid_04b0&Pid_4001
and if it doesnot work, put it in the
[Models.ntamd64]
"Nikon LS-50" = USBScanner,USB\Vid_04b0&Pid_4001
removing the corresponding line from [Models] section
(perhaps, only the first encoutered declaration is really taken into account,
or double declaration may be a problem in some circonstances ???)

Without any guarantee, but it's not long to try it, and it worths it.

OK, so I just looked at the inf file I supply for the Nikon scanners and it does include the Nikon Coolscan V (LS-50 ED). Meaning, the file and instructions provided should work for the Coolscan V. If it isn't, I suggest you look to the instructions I supplied on page one and make sure you're following them; and that you aren't missing any steps. You also NEED to pay attention to any red notes I highlight. Especially this Note under step 4...

NOTE: If your scanner is USB than the folder will be ScanUSB instead of Scan1394.

And once again, I do not have Windows 8 myself so I can't say if the fix works or not; however, some users report that the instructions do work on 8, but 8 needs to be tweaked first to allow the driver to install. See here - Getting your Nikon Coolscan to work on W7 x64.
