I'm not sure what your end game is but helping is one thing, overstepping your bounds in another. This is what you are doing. All relevant links have been posted and updated. No need to re-write what's already clearly stated, and updated in the instructions on page 1.

And again.... the OP's question has to do with the firmware update. NOT whether the other links are correct. And, again, I've already supplied him an answer that was satisfactory to him.

Again, I don't mind the help, but don't overstep your bounds. If you have a question on the procedures, or the validity of links or whatnot, ask, but don't overstep your bounds. What I mean by that is act as if the procedures are lacking when everything you've stated is clearly linked to and written in the procedures. It's disrespectful.

    Thank you.
    Sygnus21:

Let me be clear; I have no "end game" other than to assist the OP in getting his scanner working on win7, which I assume was the ultimate purpose of his enquiry. The question of the firmware update may (or not) be an essential element in achieving this goal. I must say that I am quite puzzled by your outspoken reproof of my efforts and your characterization of it as "overstepping my bounds".

If I have made any serious errors or omissions in what I have written, you would be more than justified in pointing out my failures. However note that what I have written is neither critical nor contradictory to your voluminous contributions. I may have repeated much information that you had already posted, but that can hardly be considered "disrespectful". Beyond that I was not aware that there were well defined "bounds" to what others may contribute. Your rather proprietorial attitude to this thread may well be justified by your long dedication to its preservation, but I find your rather hostile response to my attempts to contribute is, in itself, disrespectful.

My tone (attitude) is insuring people aren't confused with wrong or contradictory information, and to insure the integrity of the guide remains as clear as possible. Misplaced information or links run counter to that. People rely on me and this thread to make sure they can get their equipment running and I need to insure the integrity of this thread to support those needs. I make no apology for that.

All the instructions on what needs to be done are written out on page 1 of this thread, to include links to the needed files so when others start posting different links it can be confusing, contradictory, and none productive, which in turn causes confusion and mistrust.

As I said, I don't mind the help, in fact I welcome it, but be mindful I put a lot of time and research into the guide and need to insure it's integrity. Suggesting drop boxes for unknown files can be risky and dangerous. This I can not allow.

And it's one thing to quote a specific section of the article when specifically addressing a problem, it's another to write procedures that may be counter intuitive to the intended purpose. This would be like me posting instructions in someone else's tutorial and then linking to different sites from what they've provided. It's not only disrespectful, but it's also stepping on someone else's toes.

Again, I welcome the help, but the integrity must remain. I'm not going argue or debate this. I shouldn't have to.

    Peace

I should perhaps refrain from any further response but I must protest the manner in which you have mischaracterized my posts. Nowhere have I written any procedures, counter intuitive or otherwise, to the intended purpose. Nor have I posted any instructions whatever. The links I posted were extracted from your own posts and the source was credited. So I am at a loss to determine exactly upon which toe I have stepped.

I have the highest regard for your efforts in maintaining this thread over a period of six years. You have undoubtedly assisted hundreds of users of Nikon scanners who were frustrated by the total lack of support from Nikon themselves. That said, I am still surprised by your outspoken hostility to my well meaning attempt to assist the OP, in spite of the fact that nothing I have written either demeans or contradicts the integrity any of the instructions you have generously provided.

I welcome all the help I can get here, especially from anyone who's got the scanner working under either or Windows 8 & 10. Heck, I don't even mind posted procedures on those. I just ask that the intent and trustworthiness of this thread be maintained. I've already explained my position, you stated you position.

Let's move on and put this behind us.

    Guys,
Firstly my apologies for the silence from this side of the water - this is because for whatever reason, I'm struggling now to get the Scanner working on XP even.

Bear with me for a short history.
I've successfully used the scanner with XP, but on a computer I no longer have.
Having acquired a further XP computer, I seem unable to get the scanner to work on this - I've loaded Scan 3 from the original 'pukka' CD. XP recognises that the Coolscan 4000 is connected, (as does Belarc), but when it goes off to look for software, it says it has nothing better that that which is loaded. However, when I open Scan 3, it says 'no active device connected'. Tried uninstalling, re-installing etc.

To your question blumesan, what is interesting is that I have no \Driver\1394 folder in the Common files Nikon folder - presumably a pointer to why the device isn't recognised?

So, while I'm not comfortable about the fact I cant get it going on XP (and I cant try with 4.0.3, as XP doesn't recognise the Vista software, obviously), and it seems to me to be worth trying on Win7 with 4.0.3 without doing the firware update (as then nothing lost or 'undoable') I might try that.

Annoys me though that XP doesn't work - I've half a mind to re-build/re-format that XP machine and see if it works. The only thing I can think of is that I'm attaching to a firewire input that's on a sound card - but surely firewire is firewire?, and in any event the device gets recognised initially by XP. The underlying problem must be about the driver.

Thanks for the help - will revert when I've got it working on a re-built XP, and/or on Win 7!!

    Cheers

    Update

Unexpectedly got it working on XP quicker than expected - I hadn't realised that after installing the software from CD, then attaching the scanner, the 'wizard' then wanted to go back to the CD to get the drivers/complete the installation. So now up and running on XP again.
This then begs the question; whether to update the firmware or not - can you tell me what actually gets updated and why - ie what's the benefit of the update, especially if not actually required to work on Win7?
    Cheers

    Update 2
btw, if there is a good reason for going ahead with the firmware update, does it matter if it's done under 32bit XP or 64bit XP - whilst I have XP Pro, it's only the 32bit version.
Realise this might be outside of the scope of seven forums, but I'd hate to do an unsucccessful firmware update and render the scanner unusable under any OS!

At the risk of stepping on sygnus21 toes, he has provided the following link:
    http://nikonasia-en.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/924/~/super-coolscan-ls4000-firmware-update-1.10---windows

Wherein one finds the following statement from Nikon:

Super Coolscan LS4000 Firmware Updater version 1.10 for Windows

    What is new

Under Mac OS X, the computer would hang when it recovered from sleep mode. This problem has been addressed with firmware version 1.10. Users of OS's other than Mac OS X do not need this update.

So, while I'm not comfortable about the fact I cant get it going on XP (and I
cant try with 4.0.3, as XP doesn't recognise the Vista software, obviously), and
it seems to me to be worth trying on Win7 with 4.0.3 without doing the firware
update (as then nothing lost or 'undoable') I might try that.
I think this is worth a try, as sygnus has already suggested.
Note that sygnus has already pointed out that updating the Nikon Scan software (to 4.0.3) can be done in win7, in spite of the fact that the update software specified vista.
But the real question is, can you perform the rest of the conversion as described on page 1 in spite of the warning:
Warning: Scanners must have the latest Nikon firmware installed for these procedures to work.

I trust sygnus will chime in with the answer.

    Success

    Success!!

Delighted to report that following sygnus’ instructions to the letter (including the example file names, which helped no end in cross-referencing back to the instructions) worked for my Windows 7 Pro 64bit – without doing or even attempting the firmware update on XP (or Win7).

The only thing I could add from my experience is that I didn’t get any ‘looking for drivers’ dialogue (though as you say, ‘if they appear’), but there was a security warning when I chose the driver, which I just OK’d. Forget what it said exactly, but ‘publisher unknown’ or something like that.

Scanner working fine – many thanks for all the help. I’ll probably visit the Win 10 forums for the same reason in a few years, when I finally have to take the plunge and move off of Win7!

    Cheers

Bob, great to hear things worked out for you, and that the firmware update (lack thereof) didn't turn out to be an issue. BTW, the link for the firmware download has been updated so if you feel the need to update, it's there. But if everything is working well, I'd leave it alone.

    Happy scanning :)

Please disregard the initial version of this post. I had some trouble getting the firmware link to work, as it required registration as if I lived in the nikon-asia support area, and it took a couple of different email accounts to find one that would get the account activation response.

Navigating to any Coolscan or Nikon View support no longer seems very well supported on either the Asia or USA Nikon sites, but for the moment, using the links in the OP was successful.

I see the LS-8000 firmware page was updated just a week ago. Hopefully that means they're still tidying up the in-site navigation links.

    Arggghh!!!!!!!!

Nikon has once again changed their links around making it impossible to now find the firmware. If you've got a direct link I'd appreciate you posting it and I'll update the first page (again).

    Thanks
