    Webcam Gateway drivers

hey guys im very new to these forums so excuse the informal post, but i have recently upgraded to windows 7 ultimate x64 and i have a gateway m-6864 fx, laptop and unfortunatly the drivers that i have (video, sound, card reader) are still lacking, i am looking for the webcam driver as i am away at school and use it all the time with my buddies over skype and msn, anyways if anyone knows where i can find it, i have been on the site and no dice, also if there is a third party application that i could use that would work for skype and msn, that would be perfect,

    thanks again guys

If you still have the driver setup you used for Vista, you can use that one in Windows 7 as well... All you need to do is set the driver setup to run in compatibility mode with Windows Vista. If you're not sure how to do this, here's how:

Find the driver setup and right click the file -> Properties -> Compatibility tab -> check the option "Run this program in compatibility mode" and choose either Vista, Vista Service Pack 1 or Service Pack 2. Click OK and run the setup.

I guess you already tried this, but just to clarify:
Did you get any results by trying to update the driver in Device Manager?

You can do that by typing "dev" without quotes in the search bar on the start menu, then click on the Device Manager entry. Check to see if there's any hardware labeled as Unknown and/or having a yellow exclamation mark. Right click it and choose "Update Driver Software..." and then "Search automatically..."

Other than that, the only thing I can think of is asking for support on the Gateway website. I found some info here but it didn't help much and I'm now wondering what exact driver you had on the CD itself since there's only a 32bit driver on the website...

Right click the sound icon in the system tray and choose: Sounds
Click the Recording tab and, just in case you can't see the Microphone, right click anywhere and choose "Show Disabled Devices"
By default you don't need a driver for the microphone to work as long as you have the sound driver installed. It's just a matter of setting up the hardware properly.

    Hi King,

To stray off topic for a minute...

As you said "upgrading to windows 7 has been very frustrating at best." I know this doesn't help you, but one bit of advice I give to anyone who's even thinking about upgrading to any 64-bit OS is to do their homework for drivers, software, and hardware "before" upgrading.

Though 64-bit is gaining popularity (mostly due to RAM), it's still not where it should be in my opinion with regards to drivers. That's where a lot of frustration comes in for people upgrading. They hear Vista/Windows 7 x64 allows for more RAM usage and BAM they buy it... only to discover that this and that don't work anymore. Who's the blame for this? Well that depends on who you ask.

My point, as you no doubt have discovered, is moving to a 64-bit OS can be painful if the homework isn't done.

I'm not calling you out, or pointing fingers. I just see this as a problem in general. At least you knew how to figure out your problem!

Imagine all those non-tech savvy consumers who bought a 64-bit OS only to discover the problems you have and have no idea what to do other than call tech support and/or shell out more money?

It's a shame and a shame! Retailers understand this but see dollar signs for "computer repairs"

Well, that’s just my two cents.

At any rate I hope you find the drivers for your problem.

    Peace
