Windows 7: Canoscan LIDE20 64bit driver

Anyoen been able to find a 64bit driver for this scanner. I have searched on thier site and they only have a 32bit one?

Go ahead and attmept to install the driver (make sure to install in Compatibility Mode for Windows Vista: Compatibility Mode) and cross your fingers

You could try Vuescan from Hamrick if you can't find a driver for the scanner, though the cost of the software/driver will be $40. However you could try the trial version first.

I really think its sinful that both Nikon and Canon won't/can't provide 64-bit drivers for their dedicated film scanners. (my opinion )

I have been passed your details in regards to your support request concerning 64bit Windows 7 drivers for your LiDE 20. Unfortunately, there are not drivers available for this combination. Canon cannot guarantee the future compatibility of our products ad infinitum. We recommend that end users check for any compatibility issues prior to upgrading their system, as we cannot be held responsible for a lack of compatibility.

That's pretty much the same response Nikon gave

Fortunately I found a fix for Nikon's film scanners that I posted here - Getting your Nikon Coolscan to work on W7 x64. Perhaps you could search this forum for a Canon fix. It’s where I got some of my info for the Nikon fix.

Will give it a try. I have downloaded vuescan for now. Needless to say with poor customer service like that they wont be getting my business in future.

Seriously how much extra money does it take to develop 64 bit drivers alongside 32bit ones!!!!!

I would think of it as demand and supply. I'm sure had it been a business type network printer (for example) they'll probably have a driver for most playforms.

In your case, if the CD that comes with it isnt compatible with the 64bit OS, and if the vendor site don't have it, then what else can u do?

I think Nikon and Canon are doing their customers a great disservice, especially with the price of some of the dedicated film scanners running as high as 2 thousand plus dollars, my scanner (Nikon Coolscan 4000) cost me $1200!

The very least Nikon and Canon can do is provide 64-bit support for these. It's not like the 64-bit OS is some passing fad, it's here to stay!

Here's another sad fact (at least for Nikon), they still sell these scanners, in fact newer models, and STILL have no 64-bit support. That's utterly ridiculous given the price of these things and the fact that more and more customers are moving to a 64-bit OS for better memory management, which ironically, these scanners benefit from! I'd call that poor customer support!

Now, one can argue that in this day of digital photography, the need for these scanners is waning, well that could be true. However, consider this...though digital photography is relatively new, film photography has been around for years and as such, there would be a high demand for these scanners as a lot of film photographers would want to digitally archive their work. That's why these scanners are STILL selling today!

So, again, why won't/can’t Canon and Nikon support these under 64-bit?

Yes, we could move our business elsewhere…but then again… we’re already stuck with the item aren’t we? Sort of like you buying new hardware/software today only to find out later that it’s no longer supported. If I could predict the future, I’d hit the lottery all the time!
