You could try Vuescan from Hamrick
though the cost of the software/driver will be $40. I would try the trial version first to see if it fits your needs.
I'm not an advocate of Vuescan, I just provide the link/info as an alternative. Though I've owned the software since 2002 and keep up with the updates, I don't use it, but that's a personal issue.
However, Vuescan works with a ton of scanners and incorporates drivers allowing the software to work with a particular scanner under a 64-bit operating system. Something sorely lacking from Nikon and Canon
And no...I don't think you should pay $40 to get your scanner to work on a 64-bit OS, but in this case it may be cheaper than buying a new scanner... that is if the software works on your scanner
