Windows 7: HP Laserjet 1000

This printer is about 5 years old. It is perfect for my needs, but HP will not issue a Win 7 driver for it. I REALLY don't want to buy another . I have been given lots of advice, and tried all sorts of options. Once I did actually manage to print something.
The printer is a hybrid: parallel port connector with a USB connector coming out of it.
Please can someone advise me how to get this going?

Download the driver from the company website, that is for XP. Save it to your documents. Uninstall any traces of old drivers. Unplug your printer, and unattach it from the computer. Then right click on the link to put into compatabilty mode. Then click on the driver link in your documents. When told to do so, plug in and turn on printer. Then, lets see what to do, OH yes, begin to print. Hope it works. Nice printer for Christmas if it does.

Hello Richard - thanks for trying to help. I've tried both offerings from HP : lj1000hostbased-en.exe & lj488en.exe. When running either of these, there is no executable, only an .inf file. Neither one will install -7 says it is installing in compatibility for XP, but then almost at once says that the program is not compatible anyway. It is beginning to look as if:
1) it really is incompatible
or
2) I am an incompetent idiot.
Thanks for trying. I think I may have to bite the bullet and buy a new laser....and I've just recently bouught 2 toner cartridges ( sob....)

Lets not give up. You said that you had it printing. Lets work together on this, if we can make it work, we will both feel great. Read this and try it. Remember MS says that if it works for Vista it will work for 7


HP LaserJet 1000 Vista Driver Installation Fix "Working"

If there is something in the fix that you do not understand post here, someone will help you.

I managed to get the Laserjet to run, thankyou VERY much.

However, during the course of my various frantic efforts, I seem to have managed an abortive installation, which I think is blocking the "working" driver.

I can't uninstall or delete the rogue, which 7 attempts to troubleshoot & then gives up. Is there a way I can force an uninstall, please?

Forgive my pathetic progress - I was brilliant with machines from the Vic 20 to XP, but I woke up one morning and realised I was VERY OLD, and had mislaid my brain.....

With system restore go back to the good times. Then you can reinstall the printer again.

Now I'm just embarassed - why didn't I think of that? It worked, of course!

I was following the suggestion above for installing the XP driver and then fixing it for vista, except I have windows 7. I made it all the way through step 8. However, after I clicked on zUSB.inf and "open", I got the following error message and couldn't go any further:

"The folder you specified doesn't contain a compatible software driver for your device. If the folder contains a driver, make sure it is designed to work with Windows for x64-based systems."

And then it goes back to asking me to browse to the location of the disk - I don't get an opportunity to click "OK", and the printer "HP LaserJet 1000" is not installed, working or not.

Any suggestions??

(The first time I tried to install this printer, the computer recognized it was an HP 1000. It took me to the HP site to try to download a driver, but there wasn't one. I talked to an HP technician, who told me that HP will not be developing a driver for this printer in Windows 7. Also, apparently there used to be a very basic driver available that would likely work, and he tried to help me get to a spot on HP's website to download it, only to find out that HP had updated its website and had removed that driver.)

This what you do. Make a sytem restore point. Then make sure you get rid of any driver remnants that may be present. Make sure the printer is not showing in devices and printers. Then go to the driver web site and pick the one that is for the closest edition of 7 that you can find. Then download to your documents folder. Then unplug the printer and turn it off. Now go to doucuments, right click on the driver, and click on xp or vista (as the case maybe for the driver that you have) compatibility mode. Then download. Turn on printer when asked to. Shut off your computer and boot up, it should be ready to print. If it does not work try a few times more. Sometimes this does not work at first, but eventually it usually does.
