There are no Windows 7 64 bit drivers available for this scanner!

Epson seem quite proud of this fact........it's the last Epson kit I will ever buy!

However if you Google "Hamrick VueScan Pro v8.6.00" and I'm sure you'll find the answer to not having to throw your scanner away....I know I did!

    1. Insert the driver CD/DVD that came with your printer.
    2. Go to the start menu and type in "Device Manager" (no quotes).
    3. Find the specified printer/device.
    4. Right click on it and choose "Update driver software".
    5. Select "Browse my computer for driver software".
    6. Click "Browse" and select the CD/DVD.
    7. Hit "next" and wait while the drivers install.

This works on most old devices that seem incompatible with Windows 7 and it has worked several times for me.

Edit: If that doesn't work try this. (choose whether you want to type in your e-mail or not and continue to the download page).

    Thank you DW96.
The CD I got with my scanner can't be read by Windows 7 64bits.
What is the start menu ? Does the CD has to works to get into this menu ?

I tried the second solution (installing the drivers - I tried all versions - and indicating the path to update the driver) but it didn't work either.

    Isabelle thanks for the response

I am Building a new system on which I will load windows 7 so I was doing some "plan ahead" stuff to make sure I did not have this problem. I may have found a solution - the 1640u seems to be exactly like the 640u - I have yet to get my system built and try this but from all I have seen on the web they are indentical electronically though they do have different scan resolutions. Here is the posting I found:

"I was able to modify the Epson Perfection 2400 Photo driver to work with my 1640SU under Windows 7 x64.
    Here's the driver:
Epson America, Inc. - Downloading File Page

Open it with 7-Zip (or whatever you use), extract the file named _winzip_, extract the files contained in _winzip_ using 7-Zip (or whatever you use).

Open Es27.inf and replace all instances of USB\VID_04B8&PID_011B with USB\VID_04B8&PID_010A and save and close the file.

Now go to the Device Manager, right click your scanner, Update Driver and Software...
Browse my computer..... and use the folder you extracted _winzip_ (with the now modified Es27.inf) to.

That should do it, worked great for me."

When all the bits I have ordered are in and I have the machine built I will also give it a try. I will post the results then. I also have an advantage as I have several machines networked so if this does not work I can always use my scanner another machine to do scanning.

If you try this please post the results,

    Good luck.

I had exactly the same problem as the OP. I tried several of the solutions people have posted here, so thought I'd just share how I got on with those in case it's useful for any future readers.

I've lost the CD that came with the scanner, so I couldn't try dw96's first solution.

The VueScan program worked brilliantly. Unfortunately though, this isn't free. There is a free trial version that I downloaded which let me see that it worked, but this puts a watermark on the scanned pictures. The basic version costs about $39 and the professional version about $70, with the basic version only being entitled to upgrades for one or two years (I forget exactly) so that the professional version looked to be the better option. This was just a bit too much for me; I would have gone for it if it was under $20 (I think $10 would be a fair price) but as it was decided against it.

I tried downloading drivers for other Perfection models as suggested here and in other forums I found, but couldn't get my computer to recognise them as suitable for the 640U at all so that didn't work.

In the end the best solution for me was Linux. Obviously changing your whole operating system is a bit of a drastic solution to this problem! But I was planning to install Linux on a dual boot anyway, so this just made me get to it a bit quicker than I might have done. The Epson site has drivers for Linux; it was a little unclear just what to download out of the many files but I figured it out ok and it works fine! And completely free.
