Is there an exclamation mark next to Teredo Tunneling?
For the other & unknown devices, please right click each one, properties - details tab - hardware id's in the property drop down box. Copy and paste all of the info for each back here in a reply post and I'll see what I can find for you :)

The Acer website lists Windows 7 64 bit drivers for your laptop, so that's a good sign :)
If you go to the Windows Update, do you see any chipset drivers (ICH8M) available under XX optional updates are available?

If not, you can follow the provided link for your chipset:
    Device Type: Other Devices
    Manufacturer: Unknown
    Location: on Intel(R) ICH8M LPC Interface Controller - 2815
    You'll need to reboot afterwards.
If the A310 is still unknown after that, post back and we'll see if we can fix it

cheers for the TV tuner. i think ill leave it though, dont wanna have to pay licensing fees :) good to know what it is though.
re the unknown driver: no theres nothing in the updates.

but my main problem really is the non saving of settings after a restart. where can i ask about that ? which subforum ?

cheers a LOT for the help btw, already helped me out a lot.

    You're most welcome :)
Licensing fees? Your TV Tuner is for free to air digital I believe... no fees, just plug in the cable and fire up Windows Media Centre!
Did the ICH8M driver work ok for you? Right click the downloaded file, extract, go to device in dev man., update driver, browse, install.
The non saving of VLC settings may be fixed by opening up Control Panel - Default Program - Associate a file type with a specific program - select extension - change program

As for the toolbars & other settings etc. Have you installed any security programs like Windows Steady State, Deep Freeze, or anything else that does a similar job?

right, the TV tuner worked, and strangely the unknown is gone now htat i turned on windows updates ...
    so thats solved.
re resetting the avi files, it has nothing to do with a restart i figured. tried your method and then kinda found out its whenever i start winamp that it resets to standard ... and found the box for that one, so thats solved aswell.
    thx :)

whats left is the start menu reset 1 other thing ... not so much a bug as a feature ... in XP i got some big green bars when using the volume up/down control at my laptop, now i get nothing. anyway to restore that ?

Good question... That one I can't help you with, sorry!
I haven't seen it at all on any W7 installations, perhaps you could try posting the question in Sound and Audio?
Oh, in case you haven't already got it, this is the link to your manufacturers page for driver and application downloads for your lappy.
