    Drivers & Downloads

You might be able to find a better driver on the intel site - the above drivers may need to be installed in compatibility mode with wxp if they wont install normally, and unzipped first - this will let them install on W7, as it resolves the OS mismatch.

To install a driver OR program in compatibility mode - right click the setup.exe file - click properties - click compatibility - check run in compatibility with vista/xp etc - check run as administrator - leave the rest blank. Start setup.exe and install.

This is the install instructions from the site you may need to follow this (its for one of the drivers) :
1.Double-click the new icon on the desktop labeled R86399.EXE.
2.The Self-Extracting window appears and prompts you to extract or
unzip to C:\DELL\DRIVERS\r86399. Write down this path so the executable (I.e.
Setup.exe) file can be found later.
    3.The Self-Extractor window appears.
    4.Click OK.
5.After completing the file extraction, if the Self-Extractor
window is still open, close it.
6.Click the Start button and then click Run.
7.Type C:\DELL\DRIVERS\r86399 in the Open textbox and then click OK.
    8.Follow the on-screen installation instructions.

*If you can locate the info file in the folders you unzip you could update it thru device manager - find the graphics device - expand it - right click - select update driver, and then browse computer and find the folder with the info file in it.

    Intel site:
    http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/intel845g/

    http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Sear...ics+Controller

There are a couple there on the dell site, and the intel site (14.10.3 - it could be the best bet) not sure which is yours, but if you still need another driver get the name of the graphics chip and type it into the address bar in your browser, and add driver on the end and bing it (search) and see what comes up - post back the name in any case - I or someone might have a better idea of what to do with the search results - you should be able to find it in device manager. Dont worry you might be lucky with those xp drivers if they install, as a lot of people are reporting success with xp drivers.

Dell does not support Win 7 on this model. The only drivers they have are for Win XP and they are not compatible. Some of the hardware is Dell proprietary so non-Dell drivers will not work for some devices, especially the Audio. If you can get everything else working you will have to install a PCI sound card that is Win 7 compatible. That is what users on the Dell forum report they are doing on models that Dell does not have Vista/Win 7 drivers.

If dell does not support drivers for the video...can I put in a separate video card which is supported by win 7...it is a dell 2400 with extra sockets

If yours is a typical Dimension 2400 then it will only have PCI slots available. There are Windows 7 compatible PCI cards,

    Newegg.com - SPARKLE SFPC84GS512U2LP GeForce 8400 GS 512MB 64-bit GDDR2 PCI HDCP Ready Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards

but all things considering you would be better off to stick with XP until such a time as you have a new computer that is more suited to Windows 7.
