Display Driver stopped Responding

If its a standard intel fan it should be ok - i have mine oc from 3.0ghz to 3.7ghz and its ok to play games in summer up to about 30c indoor temp - i live on the coast and it nilly never goes over 30c indoors and have no air conditioning - its pretty stretched and well it uses a standard intel fan cooler - maybe you need to see if you got the proper parts - you could maybe bing for it, or go here, and join the forums - cause this is where all the oclockers etc hang and would probably be able to help as they build there own - nVIDIA Geforce 380 360 285 260 9800 275 295 GT GTX AMD ATI Radeon HD 5870 5850 5770 4890 X2 - Guru of 3D: PC Hardware Reviews

The highlighted portion leads me to believe you never flashed the bios in the first place. I'm not sure what exactly you did, but one thing is for sure... you did not flash the bios.

In order to flash the bios, you need to use WinFlash inside Windows 7, or use a floppy drive with the newer bios already installed on it; flashing is not something that can be done with the motherboard's driver CD.

At this point, since you're so unsure of what's going on, and what you're doing, I would advise against flashing your bios. What you need to do is first clear cmos. Unplug the computer, the remove the motherboard battery for 30 seconds... Put it back, reboot the machine and head directly for the bios. Tap the delete key (or F9... not as familiar with the Asus bios as I should be?) and look for the option to "Load Optimized Defaults". Load the optimized defaults, save your changes and reboot the machine.

Go back into the bios. Head to the PC Health section and select a shutdown tempurature. This should be set to 80C. Often, at least on the boards I buy, this is set to nothing by default... you have to tell the machine what too hot is.

If you're running stock speeds, then the stock heat sink should be sufficient. If it isn't, then something went wrong with the installation and I would then take it to the man who built it for you and tell him to re-seat the heatsink... free of charge.

Or, you can reseat the heatsink yourself... which would be my preferred option as I would not want to have someone who screwed up something this simple screw it up again. Google "heatsink installation" and spend a few minutes reading how it's done. It's shockingly simple. The only issue you'll have is how much thermal paste to apply. Use an amount about equal to 1/2 grain of rice.

Thermal paste isn't meant to be used as a buffer or another heatsink; rather, it's just there to fill the microscopic holes left in the heatsink by the lapping process... so go sparingly.

After all this your temps should be fine.

I flashed the bios when I updated to v 1207 with asus update utility, it just won't let me put a bios on there that I previously had due to it being an older version... the version that worked

Whenever you flash to a new bios you should always clear cmos and then load the optimized defaults... have you done that yet?

I downloaded speed fan to check my systems Temp. While in windows Speed fan tells me my CPU temp is avgs around 70c. Alot better than when in Bios

Yeah, I cleared cmos by removing battery and loaded default settings in bios.. still getting that error. I'm gonna have to buy a thumb drive to load the previous version of bios in ez flash

You could have a look in your manual - got to cpu installation, and see if you can work out whether you have the right heatsink and fan - i still think this might be the problem - i would say try to get that bios flashed back - if you cant maybe it is because it isnt corrupted, and the software wont allow you to - as you said you already tried with the motherboard cd - or wait for another to come thru on the asus site.
Can you do this open task manager and see how much cpu usage there is when its idling - it should be around 40c with no cpu usage (You say 70c thats too high) if not its either the bios - seems less likely or the fan and heatsink. Is there any devices in device manager with a yellow asterisk next to them - if so check optional hardware in windows update.
If you downloaded the latest catalyst driver for your video card you could adjust the fan speed of it in catalyst control centre (CCC) the 4000 series idles at 80c by default - it does with my 4870 whether it was fixed with the 4670 i dont know and that could be partially the problem if you have insufficient ventalation in your case. You need to go into advanced settings - unlock ATI overdrive and enable manual fan control turn the slider up till you get it to settle on about 50c idle, less if you want to. When you use games turn it up before starting them - use the alt +tab to go to the desktop and see how hot the gpu is in a particular game then adjust the fan speed accordingly and take note of it - you can create profiles but i can explain that later.
Do this and see what your cpu is idling at then with the gpu running cooler at idle - well worth the try as it could be the similar to the 4870 but a bit cooler you would think.
*Dont play any games until you have the cpu usage idling and temps between 35c to 45c. Indoor temps at say 21c - allow more for higher temps - post back what type of case you have also.

Do this to check the integrity of your system files - right click command prompt - properties -select run as an administrator - in the window type, and then press enter - SFC /scannow
Have your w7 install dvd handy in case you find any corrupted files.

Error 4101 display driver stopped responding... FIX

Prior to the Error 4101

I was running Vista 64, this problem was not present. I then did a CLEAN install onto Windows 7 updated all drivers including Chipset then the dreaded “display driver has stopped responding but has now recovered “started to appear during 2d and 3d applications, under event viewer I located the error 4101.

My current system is running stable by following this sequence.

UAC ENABLED
POWER MANAGMENT SET TO HIGH

1. Uninstall all GPU related drivers/ and ADOBE FLASH
2. Turn of PC (not at wall)
3. Clear CMS
4. Boot allow windows to load
5. Shut down then Turn off pc (at wall)
6. Remove GPU and PCI cards
7. Re-install
6. Restart
7. Hit del (load bios)
8. Reset to defaults
9. Load windows
10. Install 9.3 ATI (for me vista 64_win_7 64)
11. Alter TDR in registry set to 0

12. Look for unsupported monitor d-word change to 0
(Should still be under HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers )
13. Restart (happy gaming)

Prior to this, Bioshock and all other games would freeze after 3-7 mins, last night I gamed solid for an hour no freeze.

Ps. I think it is either unsupported monitor modes on windows 7 (1680 by 1050) or the TDR function. Although 1680 by 1050 is detected by CCC and windows, there may still be a compatibility issue. Any hows it’s now working.
I don’t think it is adobe flash plug-in, UAC or power management.
