To install my HP Laserjet P1006 I had to do these steps:
Download the Vista x64 (I run x64) mini driver (not full feature driver which is huge) from HP
Extract the files from the installer file to a temporary directory (using 7-Zip which is freeware)
    Plug in the printer
    run devmgmt.msc
go to the "unknown device" (which was my printer)
go to the driver tab, click update drivers
click the find drivers myself button
browse to the temporary directory and double click on the first file shown in the list
    install the drivers

    And it works perfectly.

    Hi all,

I too am trying to install a LaserJet P1006 (same family as the P1005) on my 64 Bit version of Windows 7. I've already followed the steps above and while the driver is accepted, I am told "Windows Encountered a Problem Installing the driver software for your device".
The printer now appears under my list of printers but has a status of "requires troubleshooting". The troubleshooting wizard just encounters an unknown error.

    Any ideas anyone?

    Thanks!

Hey guys, I'm hoping for some help here. I've downloaded and re-downloaded the HP LaserJet P1006 Vista x64 drivers. I've extracted the drivers and manually pointed the Driver Update Wizard to these drivers. However, every time I try to install them I get the following error:
Windows found the driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it.

If I then try and add another printer using the driver I get (and it's absolutely stupid I don't get this specific error when actually trying to install the driver through device manager instead of the generic crap it gives):
Print driver was not installed. Operation could not be completed (error 0x000000c1)

I've ran verifier.exe and that hasn't thrown back any errors after the reboot.

Someone please help me. I had that specific driver installed fine before. But I then had to format my PC and now I can't get it installed!

I was having the same problems. It looks like HP released a new version on 8/15/2009, that is working just fine.

Select your operating system HP LaserJet P1005 Printer

    1. Select your operating system (Vista for Windows 7)
    1. Download HP LaserJet Hostbased Plug and Play Basic Driver (3.14MB)
    2. Unplug printer
    3. Install drivers
    4. Plug in printer.
    5. You're Done!

I tested on Windows 7 Enterprise RTM x64.
