I know this is a bit late, but I've just got some feeback on the unknown device and USB ports - basically to resolve this issue you need to shut down the PC, turn everything off for at least one minute, anyhow, the details are here : Unknown Device
Better late then never though!
Take your laptop battery out and the mains lead. Leave it for a minute or so for power to drain out of system.
This resets the usb chip which will then rediscover your ports etc when you plug power back in and switch on.
Has it worked for you?
