Windows 7: In terrible trouble with HP Drivers

In terrible trouble with HP Drivers

I am in terrible trouble with drivers for an HP C 7280 Photosmart All in One.
The device has been working perfectly well under Windows 7 build 7000, and more lately with 7057 upgrade.
Starting with some unexplained problem in printing I tried to reinstall the driver-I had a file sitting in my Downloads file. BIG MISTAKE!. It found that the installation I had was incompatible and said it would remove these elements (or something similar). Net result is that now Windows won't/can't recognise the printer when it i plugged in (USB), won't allow any other HP driver to install (doesn't recognise Windows 7 OS) and in some way I don't understand had the effect of slowing my system down to less than a crawl -(it took a good 10 minutes to reboot)-windows were appearing slowly like ghosts (so the nVidia GeoForce card was affected). Eventually I was forced to a system restore. I removed all of the HP files from the system I could. Rebooting was again a 10 minute job, etc. Eventually I did another system restore to an even earlier time, and at leas the system is working sufficiently for me to send off this plea for help from anyone.
How can a printer driver wreak such havoc on a system???
HELP!!!!

HP 5440 Deskjet here. What I did:
-unplug printer completely
-un-install all HP software from control panel
-plug in printer and let Windows Update install what it has, then try again

For me it installed 4 different items

Thanks for help guys.
Ok I must be a mug, but what is 'Vista compatibility Mode' in Windows 7 and how does one get 'into' it?
Also, I have tried to remove all HP files from control panel and let Windows 'find' and install the HP 7280. It just doesn't recognise it. The printer just appears as 'unrecognised hardware' in control panel. When I try to install HP drivers from the HP site, it says the (Windows 7) is incompatible. So I"m just stuck.

Ok. I tried to setup the HP driver package from HP in
Vista compatibility mode. It simply got so far and said 'incomptible operating system'.
I deleted all the HP files from the system via control panel, then reconnected the powered up printer. Windows 7 didn't recognise it (again). At least my slow boot up etc problems have gone since the last system restore, but I still can't get my HP printer to work for love nor money.
Any more ideas any one
Thanks indeed, in anticipation.

Were the drivers you got from HP specifically for Vista or XP, if they were XP drivers then you will have to install them with XP compatibility mode, although you would be better off if you could find the Vista ones.

During the process of adding the printer select Windows update. It takes a long time for it to respond (at least 10 minutes) but there is a driver for C7200 series printers.
