    Hi chrisx3000, welcome to SevenForums!

You may need to clean your registry before doing anything else, I use CCleaner but there are many out there. Make sure to back up and restore your registry first: Registry - Backup and Restore

I'm not sure if that'd be the problem cause i just recently bought the laptop, probably a month now. Before I try that do you have any other suggestions to what may be causing the error code and how to fix it?

    Hi Jrlogan
When you get to the part where you are browsing for the driver manually
just choose show all and look under microsoft, you should then see the Microsoft Common Controller for Window Class

Hi, I'm also having trouble getting my receiver to work. I follow the instructions fine, accept the 'Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows Version: 2.1.0.1349 [8/13/2009]' dosn't appear on the list under 'Windows common controller for windows class' Mine says 'MICROSOFT common controller for windows class' So i'm pretty sure i'm looking in the right place. But after that all thats on the list is a driver for 'XBOX 360 Controller for windows' and that one doesn't seem to work.

Im on Windows 7 home premium 64-bit. Please advise.

Did you install driver for it first. Xbox360_64Eng.exe
You get it from here - Software Download
Then you should see more options under "Windows Common Controller"
I am pretty sure thats how I did it. I just installed one the other day on a laptop. But I just do it and don't really pay attention to how I did it.

I did that. I've downloaded and installed 'xbox 360 Accessories Software 1.2 64-bit for Windows 7' but still, my controller dosn't connect. and all the list of drivers is empty accept for 'XBOX 360 controller for windows' and that one dosn't work.

I'm not sure where i've gone wrong.

Ok did you follow the steps again after installing the Xbox 360 Accessories Softwrare

    Right click on Computer
    Go to Properties
    Click on Device Manager
Right click on the Unidentified Device ( or if no Unidentified, then the xbox device)
    Go to Properties
    Go to the Drive tab
    Click on Update Driver…
Browse my computer for driver software
Let me pick from a list of devices on my computer
Windows Common Controller for Window Class
    Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for: 2.1.0.1349 [8/13/2009]
    Update Driver Warning
    Click Yes

That is strange that you don't see it now.
