Major problem with ATI Catalyst update

I have been trying, unsuccessfully, to update my Catalyst drivers from 9.12 to 10.2.

Following the instructions, I first tried to uninstall 9.12. The program may not have uninstalled properly, but it did succeed in removing access to the uninstaller. I was not asked to reboot, the monitor resolution was not effected, and ATI CCC still appears when I right-click the desktop.

I then tried to install 10.2. I got as far as the Install button (before being presented the array of options) when the installation failed. The error message was

This program may not have installed properly
If this program did not install correctly, try reinstalling using settings that are compatible with this version of Windows.
The error message makes no sense as the version I attempted to install is the one for my OS (W7 Pro x64).

I then rebooted and tried installing again, but got the same error. I then downloaded and tried reinstalling 9.12, but again got the same error message.

At this point, my computer is functional, but I would like to resolve this problem. Catalyst is clearly still installed and it seems that the first step must be to remove it. Can you offer any suggestions? Is there any value in recovering the system to yesterday and trying to start over?

I tried doing a system restore- both attempts failed. (It makes me extremely nervous that system restore cannot be trusted...)

MFC80U.DLL is a windows system file, nothing to do with ATI drivers, so you may have some other corrupted application / installations issues as well.

However, try as Nick suggested and run driver sweeper to clean the ati files. But before you do:

► Go to Control Panel > Device manager > Display adapters > r-click on the adapter > properties > Uninstall the driver

► Re-boot into safe mode and then run Driver Sweeper.

► Boot normally and try installing the 10.2 drivers.

If that doesn't work, then you may have to dig a little deeper to find the root of the corrupt installation issue.

Even easier - reinstall 9.12 driver over the top (if it will let you coz you performed a system restore)
    Then uninstall 9.12,
    reboot computer,
boot up with default vga driver,
look on your C: drive for any 'Ati' installed folders and delete them! (not your downloaded 9.12/new 10.2 folders obviously)
Download CCleaner from Piriform and clean your registry.
Load Ati catalyst 10.2 and reboot

What model video card to you have?

I'm asking because, until recently, Catalyst 9.12 was the most current version of the "legacy" drivers. If you have one of the legacy cards, the new regular 10.2 drivers will not work with your card --but the new legacy 10.2 drivers probably will.

    All,

Thanks for the suggestions. I should have tried CCleaner. Instead, I wound up doing a full-up reinstall, after which, 10.2 worked just fine. (The graphics card is new - the problem was something else, cause unknown.)

Hi, my video card is Sapphire HD 4830 512 MB. I went to update the installed Catalyst with the newer 10.7 version. I have tried a lot of different methods without any success, for example: went to add/remove programs and tried tooking it out; started the update setup file and tried to uninstall it ,but both ways I got an error message.
"Another version of this product is already installed. Installation of this version cannot continue".
I did use add and remove programs but unsuccessfully.

Solution: Start -> Run -> msconfig -> startup
and disable any ATI/Catalyst components. Reboot and run installation setup file again. Result -> Installation complete.

P.S. Be sure BOOT protection mode on the motherboard is NOT active and the option to boot drivers for display from sleep mode (S3) is disabled.
