Kernel-PnP Error Under Event Viewer  

Hi All,

Firstly, I must say this forum offers great Windows 7 advice and detailed instructions for non-techie gurus like myself! Keep it up!

Recently, my shutdown time is inconsistent ranging from 20 seconds to 2 minutes and I think the culprit is Kernel-PnP error which I've found under the Event Viewer. I'm not absolutely sure but I believed this should be the cause as there are no other errors displayed.

This is what is shown in the Event Viewer under Customs View => Administrative Events

Has anyone encountered the same scenario? Is it due to some registry settings that's causing the problem?

Can some experts shed some light on this and what are the resolution ways to trouble-shoot this issue?

Most of the search results with a similar id say its the finger print device so try to find an updated driver for your finger print device or post back your laptops id number/name OR GO TO THE MANUFACTURES SITE - support - downloads - and select from a list your laptops name or type it in, and you will be taken to a driver page, and then select your OS - assuming you have a laptop, and my guess its the finger print driver you need is correct.

*If you go to device manager and find the finger print device, and it has the same ID your in business, or check each device till you get a match - right click the device - click properties - details - hardware IDS.

I cant find a hardware identifier for this device to make it easier.

Thanks very much for your reply and it was indeed the Fingerprint Software issue when I followed your instructions under Device Manager. And from the various links you've posted, I've tried to update my Fingerprint Software.

I've downloaded the latest ThinkVantage Fingerprint Software from the Lenovo website, uninstalled the former version, installed the new one and yet the same issue persists once I restart and check under Event Viewer. Sigh...

Anyway, the Fingerprint Reader is good to use and what really bothers me is the inconsistent shutdown time I'm getting on my ThinkPad, ranging from a super fast 15-20 seconds to a painfully long 2-3 minutes at times.

I've followed almost all the tips and tweaks here in reducing the shutdown time and it was much better compared to when I first got it.

Right now, can I know what's causing this irregularity in shutdown time? Why does it shutdown so fast this time and taking forever the next time round?

Programmes, ADDONS to browsers - have you left task manager open when shuting down - select applications, firstly, and see if anything is there before shutting down - close any open programmes firstly, if there arent any now in device manager select processes and see which are the last left viewable if thats possible after starting shut down. There are 2 start up folders - one, start - all programs - startup - note down whats there two, type msconfig.exe in search, and select the result - in the window select startup - note down whats there also, ok if you restart the computer and shut it down immediately and its not slow that means its none of these programms are the cause - you could probably just assume that in any case - next you need to try and eliminate the cause, this narrows it down theoretically - if you have multiple browsers just use one for a period and selective programmes this may take forever but worth trying as you might strike it lucky.

Another suggestion is to use MSE security as its good and its microsoft this would eliminate the antivirus programme as the culprit if you havet already got it - Virus, Spyware & Malware Protection | Microsoft Security Essentials

Hope this maybe of some help - If it were me, as I have time to burn, and nothing else worked, I would do system restore back to the day i installed the OS, ie the first restore point and take it from there checking each program i installed.

Just leave it if you can live with it is my best advice, and try MSE - your decision.
