Hauppauge PVR-150 card causes Windows 7 to freeze

I was referred to this section of the forum after troubleshooting a few early installation problems (details here: Can't get installation past "Starting Windows").

My current issue: Windows 7 (32-bit) boots up and works perfectly until I add in my Hauppauge PVR-150 card into any of my 3 vacant PCI slots. As soon as that card is added, Windows 7 will freeze on the "starting windows" screen, immediately after the first orange/red pixel appears. If I attempt to boot into any kind of safe mode, the system hangs on CLASSPNP.sys. Even recovery mode ends up hanging at a black screen.

I've read that Windows 7 is supposed to support that card, so I'm having a hard time understanding why it won't work. As soon as the card is removed from the system, all issues disappear.

    SPECS
    Mobo: Asus A8R-MVP
    RAM: 3gb DDR2
    Video: nVidia GeForce GT220
    Tuner: PVR150 (model 26xxx)

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

That's the exact driver I've already downloaded, but unfortunately, I never get a chance to install it because of the freezing! I even tried removing the card (allowing Windows 7 to successfully boot), then trying to install it, hoping that having the driver present would allow the OS to boot successfully when the card was re-inserted. Unfortunately, the driver will not install as it throws an "unable to detect hardware" error. So it seems that the hardware needs to be present in order for the driver to install. If anyone knows a way to get around that, I'd be willing to give it shot!

    Hi,
Has this card worked with your current hardware before?
I have two of these working with Windows 7 x86 and they work fine.

You bet...in fact, I still have XP dual-booting and it works like a charm in that OS.

I've heard of others using that card with Windows 7, so it seems like a card/mobo/OS combination in my case.

It's almost as if I need to inject the drivers into Windows 7 before I actually install the card, just so it can get past the booting screen...

How long did you wait in safe mode? I have seen some hardware detection take a really long time.

Really, eh? I gave it about 30 minutes, but I'm open to trying it longer.

I'll leave it on overnight tonight and see if that does anything.

Thanks for the suggestion! I'll post back tomorrow with the results.

I can tell you that this is not a 7 issue. I have that exact card and do not have any problems using it.

If it is not a hardware/mobo/os combo problem. Then you may have to install Win 7 while that card is installed int he slot. If you have done that already, then I don't know what else to tell you other than, bummer.

Well, left it on overnight trying to boot into safe mode, only to find it still hung on CLASSPNP.sys this morning.

I read another article about renaming CLASSPNP.sys to CLASSPNP.old and trying to boot into safe mode then. Does that make any sense to anyone, or is that just going to prevent safe mode from loading up properly anyway?

You may want to run sfc /scannow
