Problem with Scrolling on acer aspire 5517

Alright, hopefully someone here can help me Today I got my brand new Acer Aspire 5517. Everything is perfectly fine, except for one tiny insanely annoying thing.

When I go to scroll by actually moving the scrollbar on the screen, the cursor does not let go immediately after I lift my finger to do something else. So if I scroll down a bit and move the cursor to click on something RIGHT after, it drags the page with it as if I still had a hold on the scroll bar. If I scroll, wait a second and then go, it's fine. But who wants to do that?

Looking at the scrollbar, when I click it highlights blue as I scroll, and even after I let go until it decides it's no longer stuck to my mouse. This drag-lock problem does not seem to apply to anything else.. I can drag around windows or folders with no sticking. I dug through the touchpad settings and there doesn't seem to be anything that applies to scrolling only.

I have an ALPS touchpad driver. I asked about this on Yahoo Answers, and someone said it was probably a driver problem, and to use the driver updater. I did this and it updated and had me restart. After that the scrolling problem was fixed, but I couldn't use the scrolling part of the touchpad (I like to use both). I looked back into the mouse settings and it seemed to think I ONLY had a mouse, and all of the touchpad related settings were gone. so I put the old driver back on, and my drag lock problem persists.

Has anyone else had this problem? Because updating the driver fixed the first problem, I am under the impression it's a driver issue, but I could be wrong. Any settings somewhere I missed that can fix this? Any other drivers I can download?

Thanks!

Maybe the scrolling area of the touchpad was set to very narrow. There is usually a setting where you can drag the scrolling area to a wider setting.

I thought something like this might be the case, but when I went to the touchpad/mouse settings, all options that related to touchpads were gone (Like scroller width, sensitivity, etc), as if I only had a mouse driver installed. Thanks for the suggestion though

LOL, I guess you have to get a mouse. I use this beauty on the laptops because I cannot deal with the touchpad. You never have to move your hand/arm.

Well, I tried my little USB mouse and that solved the problem too. *sigh* I just wish I didn't *have* to use it if I want to avoid that problem

That mouse there does look pretty sweet though. Might have to save for one.

Ok, update. I am either an idiot or something was kind of wonky. I un-and-re installed several different versions of several drivers for the touch pad. At one point I did something that made it so that I couldn't tap-click with the touchpad, which was very irritating. I uninstalled all drivers and reinstalled the original one (finally) and everything was "normal" with the scrolling stick problem, except for that I had to click to release dragged windows.

Sooooo I knew where to turn that option off, which had actually always been on (I passed by it several times) but it never seem to actually do anything. I turned it off, and lo and behold, the scroll bar stopped sticking to the cursor and all is well.

So I have no idea if I just TOTALLY missed something and accidentally fixed it or if it just took the computer a little while to get it's head straight, but it's all working now. *skips off into oblivion*

Very good. Eventually all problems get solved or solve themselves. LOL

This is very heartening, because I have been dealing with the same "feature" and it is highly annoying!

OP, would you mind listing what the setting was that you unchecked that disabled the cursor sticking to the scrollbar and to windows? I must have gone through everything in that damn nested settings tree with no luck and it's driving me batty.

I found the setting too!

For those wondering, the setting (which seemed to have been enabled by default) is called "ClickLock."

Start > Control Panel > Mouse (if using Classic View) and then right there on the bottom of the first tab, there it is!

Good grief that was so infuriating.
