    Clean install is always best.

    Check with the Upgrade Advisor:

Theog is spot on. Clean install lends itself to fewer problems down the road, and the Upgrade Avisor is also highly recommended.

Make that three votes for a clean install after running upgrade advisor.

Hello Thebza, welcome to the Seven Forums.

You can not in-place upgrade a 32-bit operating system to a 64-bit, so if you want to use 64-bit Win7, you need to do a clean install.

Clean install is always faster and easier, but not necessary the better alternative (yes, I know: I belong to the minority here!), although it quite often is that. If you even consider to do an in-place upgrade, read this first: A simple guide to a successful in-place upgrade
