Windows 7: Clear USN Journal

15 Jun 2014   #1

Windows 7 Home Premium
Clear USN Journal

Here's a program that will delete the USN Journal on any specified internal NTFS formatted drive allowing a new empty USN Journal to be created on boot.

Note: It has only been tested on my machine so if anyone else wants to give it a go and report back - feel free.

Have a look at the "READ_ME.txt" first.

There are two versions. One each for 32bit and 64bit machines.

It needs to be run once for each NTFS drive (if you have more than one).

If you experience any problems after the USN Journal has been deleted it's best to run chkdsk /f

Download USN Journal cleaner: USN Journal

Note: The freed space will not show up if you view the drive's properties via right click - properties. That's because the file is classed as an Alternate Data Stream and it doesn't show up as used space in Windows.
