Can't get gadgets working, help please!

    Hi all,

I'm new to these boards but am needing some help. I have gone through all the relevant posts I have found via Google, some of which I found here on this board and have not been able to get the gadgets in windows 7 working properly.

I recently purchased a copy of Everest to monitor all of my temps/voltages and would like to be able to display them right on the sidebar/gadget line.

Long story short, everytime I try to click Gadgets in the menu when I right click the desktop, try to run sidebar.exe, anything, it tells me only an admin has the privileges to do so. I've tried turning UAC back on, no go. I am an administrator on this PC, in fact the only user on this PC and have verified I am in the usergroup.

Any help would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance everyone.

I should also add that I tried the things mentioned in this thread, and the links mentioned in this thread and it still says an admin is needed.

Also, when I enabled the built in admin account and tried to give full access to administrator and/or users it gives me an error saying unable to save changes.

Also, when I try to run sidebar.exe while logged into the built in admin account, it says I need admin right...

    I'm confused -.-

I know that you don't think you have a virus or any other evil software, but to proceed with any assurance of success then please install, run MalwareBytes and Microsoft Security Essentials following my draconian approach which has never failed me.

ANTI-VIRUS - VIRUS and MALWARE REMOVAL / PROTECTION
    1. Download MalwareBytes. Malwarebytes Malwarebytes
    2. Disconnect from the Internet.
    3. Disable your present antivirus software and firewall.
    4. Remove your present antivirus software and firewall.
    5. Install and run the MalwareBytes Quick Scan (remove any bad guys). 3min 29secs on my laptop.
    6. Reconnect to Internet.
    7. Update MalwareBytes.
    8. Run malwarebytes quick scan again.(remove any bad guys). 3min 38secs on my laptop.
    9. Run MalwareBytes full scan. 16min 8secs on my laptop. With large, full disk ~2hours.
    A. Disable your present antivirus software and firewall
    B. Remove your present antivirus software
    C. Download Microsoft Security Essentials.
    http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/
    D. Run Microsoft Security Essentials. Quick Scan - ~8 min on my laptop.
    E. Run Microsoft Security Essentials. Full Scan - ~ 1hr 50 min on my laptop.
Now I advise you to uninstall MalwareBytes and only install again when and if you need it.
Why?, you ask. Leaving MalwareBytes installed slowed my system. AutoRuns showed MalwareBytes processes running even after exiting from MalwareBytes.

Okay. I'll give these a shot when I get home from work. I already have Microsoft Security Essentials and it checked clean as of yesterday @ 3am but will run through the process again also w/ the other software and report back.

    Rona,
Are you logged on under an account with Admin privileges?

I can't get the thing to malfunction.

True , I've not tried same by logging on under a standard account.

Yeah, it is an Administrator. I even tried enabling the built in admin account and same thing >.>

That's the absolute insane thing to me - It gave me the error message even when I was logged in as the built in admin account. I also tried to edit the permission to sidebar.exe when in the built in admin account and it wouldn't allow me to make changes.

Are there any services that the gadgets/sidebar are dependant upon that I may have off/disabled? I would think being logged in as the built in admin would still allow me to bring them up but, just tossing out random ideas >.>

I've done everything except download that file it has there - I went through the local group policy editor and enabled them, yes.
