Searched the windows live categories and couldn't find one. Any help would be appreciated.

lol, yeah not really a gadget....there has to be some type of gadget that will let you click a button and automatically save a screenshot of your screen place it on the desktop as a jpeg.

Try Jing. You can program it to a Function key. I put it on F9 and if I want a screenshot or snip, I just press F9. In addition I can enhance the shot with comment boxes, arrows, highlights, etc. Plus you can directly upload the shots and more. Really handy. The Winstep Nexus dock has one.

Winstep Nexus Dock and Nexus Ultimate - The Advanced Docking System for Windows

I'm almost certain it comes with the free version (I have the paid version now.)

Not really a gadget. "Snipping Tools" is a huge improvement over the method you describe, but Cmd Shift 3 or 4 beats the crap out of it
I'd be very happy to find a tool that works like that under W7.

    LightScreen

Not a gadget,, there is no need for a sidebar gadget for Screenshots.
A good tool is all you need.

I would also recommend FastStone Screen Capture although not free
    Still very good tool.

There is still a free version of FastStone Screen Capture. Get it here: A+ Freeware - Multimedia & Design - FastStone Capture 5.3 (last freeware version) - But Jing is even better. I use both.
