    A google search comes up with this Mail Preview Gadget. I haven't tried it but give it whirl and maybe post back and let us know if it works.

    Have a look at PopTray Mail Notifier.

    It's old but works with win7, you may need to use an add-on for Hotmail though should work natively for POP3

    I install the addon. Its gray, but when I go to my hotmail account I get new messages even the envelop is gray.
