    Dad's Stocks gadget in Win7

My Dad wants his stocks gadget from Vista on Win7 but it seems to be missing - in fact the extended gadget library is no longer available due to some gibberish about the future which someone apparently assumes is Win8.

I have found the file in Vista Programs Files and Appdata and copied it to corresponding files in Win7, it loads into the smaller gadgets menu but when chosen says "Service Not Available."

The top search for replacement says it's no longer supported in Win7 and suggests a Yahoo gadget that is a customizable mess.

Is there a way to get Dad's favorite gadget from Vista to work in Win7, or if not is there a simpler gadget that gives just the three major market's readings?

    Thanks.

I have a fix for you Greg, you need the wlsrvc.dll from C:\Program Files\Windows Sidebar from Vista then in Windows 7 you need to take ownership, give yourself permission, and then rename the wlsrvc.dll to wlsrvc.bak.dll then put the wlsrvc.dll from Vista in C:\Program Files\Windows Sidebar, then I put the Stocks gadget in C:\Program Files\Windows Sidebar\Gadgets.

I did this in VMware and it worked, it was Windows 7 32 bit so I am assuming if your dad has 64-bit you'll also have to do it in Program Files(86) also.

If you need any more help or if I confused you let me know.

Jerry, you're a genius! Dad has his favorite gadget back exactly as before.

At first after doing your workaround the gadget was giving a "Cannot connect" error when dragged from the small gadgets menu as before. I uninstalled it there, deleted it in Program Files and added it back. It would not return to the gadgets menu so I restored the old one to there from Recycle Bin and suddenly it worked.

Can you tell us the secret to that fix, Jer?

This link seems to say they had probs licensing that gadget in Win7: Stock Gadget for Windows 7

Some complaints early on about it's being missing were also answered by Jerry: Solved Stocks For Windows 7 (by Microsoft) - Where can I find it? - Windows 7 Forums

I had been able to copy it into gadgets and Programs file from Vista which loaded it into the small gadgets menu, but when I dragged it off it said it couldn't connect. I wonder how that was fixed?

    You're Welcome Greg

It's not a secret I just did a Google search for "make vista stocks gadget work in windows 7" and did some research found what others had done and tested to make sure it worked and it did.

but when I dragged it off it said it couldn't connect.
What do you mean by dragging it off?

When I dragged the gadget into 7 Program File from Vista it populated the small gadget menu which comes up when one rightclicks the desktop to choose Gadgets. But then when I dragged it from that menu onto Desktop it said it couldn't connect. Only after I did the workaround did it work but I had to resurrect the Menu listing from Recycle Bin to get it put back on Menu.

    Thanks again.

    OK got it now.

Just for anybody's information out there you also should go to the task manager and kill the sidebar.exe first then make the changes and then go ahead and start the gadget from Desktop Gadget Gallery
