After spending a considerable amount of time trying to restore my Norton Gadget, I found out that when I reinstalled Norton Internet Security 2012, it updated to a newer version which no longer includes the Norton desktop gadget. If you've reinstalled or updated Norton you can go to the program and click on support and then about. If the version starts with 20. it is a newer version that has eliminated the Norton desktop gadget to improve performance. There was no indication that this feature had changed during the reinstall or update.
