Where do some gadgets go?

This is so basic but it drives me nuts. I just tried to dl'd speed test gadget for Win 7 using IE 8. It opens and then disappears. I've spent an hour raking over my machine to find where it went but there is no sign of it. I've had a few gadgets do this to me over the years (as in not install) but I can find them in my dl'd folder or registry. This one seems to just vanish?
Can anyone else please confirm this. It will nag @ me until I know. I am hoping it's as simple as UAC blocked it but the gadget is highly reviewed I don't know.
TIA,

Open start menu and type shell:gadgets and press enter. This will open a new explorer window with the folder to where you should install your gadgets.

Hi,

The gadgets in win 7 are stored in: C:\Windows\winsxs

But when you will try to save gadgets you have downloaded it is impossible
because win 7 says: "you have no administrator permission to do that"

Err, not quite. While you might find some gadgets resources stored in C:\Windows\winsxs, that is not where the gadgets are stored. Gadgets are stored in:

C:\users\(User Name)\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Sidebar\Gadgets

or

C:\program files (x86)\Windows Sidebar\Gadgets
