Desktop gadgets are managed by your system administrato

I did a clean install and upgraded from XP to Windows 7 Pro x64. For a week or so after the upgrade I had windows Gadgets displaying on the desktop but now they're gone and I can't get them back. When I try, I get "Desktop gadgets are managed by your system administrator" I am the system administrator but it won't let me manage them. Here is what I've tried so far

1 - Have Right-clicked on the desktop and uncheck/check "Show desktop gadgets"
2 - Have gone to Control Panel, Turn windows Features on or off,
uncheck/check "Windows Gadget Platform". Restarted PC each time.
3 - Have gone to Local Group Policy Editor, User Configuration/Administrative
Templates/Windows Components/Desktop Gadgets and verified everythig is
"Not configured" includeing Turn off desktop gadgets and Turn Off user-installed
desktop gadgets.
4 - I have UAC set to one level above 'Turn off' but have also went to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Sidebar
\settings and I have created DWORD for 'AllowEvelatedProcess' and
'ShowGadgets' Both are set to 1.

Nothing has worked so far. I don't know what else to try. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello Upsman, Welcome to SF,

Did you try the Registry Method in Option 1 in this Tutorial Gadgets - Enable or Disable

Hope this helps,

No, I tried option 2. I just did option 1 and it worked; thanks. I didn't do it originally because I though option 1 would do the same thing as option 2 and you could do one or the other.

Is it not ridiculous that Windows 7 Ultimate produces a message such as "desktop gadgets are administered by your system administrator..." and won't let me restore gadgets after they have mysteriously disappeared (perhaps as a result of running "Tweak Me"?), even when I am indeed the system administrator?

Instead, I spent over an hour researching how to get them back. This forum suggested downloading a registry tweak (Option 1) but did not quote the actual text to put in the registry, and clicking on download produced no result until I restarted the computer. I was then able to download and run the tweak, and now I have my gadgets back.

But I strongly resent having to get into the registry just to turn gadgets on and off. There are many good things about Windows 7, but this is not one of them!
