frame rate drops in Counter Strike: Source

hi there,

so I switched from Windows XP to Windows 7 last week and I've been getting random frame rate drops..I got pretty good frame rates in Windows XP and didnt get any choke at all..in Windows 7 my frame rates are around 50-60 (which is fine) but they randomly and frequently drop to like 10-15 fps for 2-3 seconds. It gets annoying after a while obviously.

my computer specs are as follows:

Windows 7 32-bit
Pentium 4 3.2 GHz HT
1.5GB RAM
160GB HDD
nVidia 8800GS video card

has anyone else experienced this or can anyone recommend a solution to fixing the problem?

thank you

What Build of Windows 7 do you have and was it from Microsoft or a torrent, I ask because there were reports of infected torrents about last week and if you don't have any virus software then I would recommend you get some, most of us are using Avast Home free edition.

I'm not sure how to check if I have it or not, I just assumed Windows 7 would install the appropriate drivers

nevermind, it's the same in Windows 7 as it is in Windows XP..it says i have driver version 8.15.11.8172 but at the top of the window it says (Prerelease - WDDM 1.1)

i'll try to update the driver and see what happens.

well i updated the driver, and now the driver version is "8.15.11.8585" and there's no WDDM comment at the top of the screen.

I just tried Source and I didnt get my fps dropping like it used to. I'll play more tomorrow just to make sure the driver fixed it.

Well, your pc with only 1.5GB ram that is why, you can afford buy new a pair of 2GB total 4GB should be no problem.

1.5GB ? you got kiddin me

yes 1.5GB is best for XP but not Vista or Win 7 okay.
